Capello caught up in perjury investigation
Fabio Capello could be sent to prison for six years after prosecutors in Italy placed the England manager under investigation for alleged perjury. Luca Palamara, the Rome prosecutor, will look into whether Capello withheld information from an Italian court in March in a trial relating to an agency that managed players and coaches. Six men are accused of putting pressure on players to sign agreements with Gea World, an agency run by Luciano Moggi, the former Juventus general manager and a defendant in the case.
Capello, who coached Juventus from 2004 to 2006, told the court that he did not deal with player contracts while in Italy and had not heard of players being pressured into signing agreements. Under Italian law, a person found guilty of withholding information in court can be jailed for up to six years.
Carvalho doubtful
Ricardo Carvalho, the Chelsea defender, faces a race to be fit for his team's Barclays Premier League match against Bolton Wanderers on Sunday. Carvalho limped out of the 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Monday after twice falling heavily on his back. The Portugal defender had intensive treatment on the injury yesterday and is desperate to be fit for the crucial match. Salomon Kalou is struggling with an ankle injury but should be fit.
Hodgson keeps faith
Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager, has said that he always had faith in his players to pull off the “great escape” and avoid relegation. A win against Portsmouth in their final game on Sunday will ensure their top-flight status and complete a remarkable turnaround. “I fear we've left it very late, but the great thing is we go into the last game with a chance of success,” Hodgson said. “We didn't lose faith and we've always thought we could do what we've done.”
Bruce lends support
Steve Bruce, the Wigan Athletic manager, has said that he will have one eye on the relegation battle unfolding at Birmingham City, his former club, as they play Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. “I would be pleased for Birmingham if they stayed up - for the players and the supporters,” he said. “I brought the majority of the players there. I take no satisfaction out of seeing Birmingham in the trouble they are in because I had six wonderful years there.”
Help for Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday hope that the appointment of Deloitte & Touche, the financial services company, to seek a buyer for the club will expedite their return to the top flight. The club announced their decision after talks with a consortium headed by Geoff Sheard, a Lancashire businessman, failed to lead to an offer. “The board have started the official process which they hope will enable the club to move to the next level,” Kaven Walker, the chief executive, said.
