Out there, somewhere, is a sausage machine busily transforming animated family films into vaguely competent video games. Wall-E is the latest such project and is based on Pixar’s heart-warming tale of a lonely robot on an abandoned Earth.

You play mainly as the film’s robot protagonist and must jump across platforms, repair vending machines and perform various other repetitive tasks. The gameplay mostly works well, although the camera tends to shift position annoyingly.

Later sections are riddled with mindless robot-blasting. The real trouble is that the ugly graphics convey little of Pixar’s artistry. In fact, it’s depressing to find that a game about a machine that grows a soul is so oddly soulless and generic.
