SHINY CONTEMPORARY developments used to be a London thing. But if you are looking for new design without all the hassle of living in the capital, there is plenty to choose from elsewhere. Southampton offers most of the perks you expect from a city in a manageable bite-size chunk.

West Central, a new property development by Linden Homes, is a stone’s throw from all the main high street shops, including John Lewis, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Gap. With an abundance of eateries on your doorstep, you can stagger home easily after too much Bordeaux at Oxford’s, the local bistro. Guilt-ridden residents can work off their hangovers at the fitness centre along the road.

The front of the development is dominated by a contemporary take on a Victorian bay window. But only five flats enjoy this feature.

The inside is designed to be flexible and adapt to suit your needs. Sleek open-plan kitchens also add to the illusion of space. Although all the flats are billed as two-bedders, only one of the bedrooms is a permanent fixture. A folding wooden wall can close off an area for a second room, should you need a study or spare bedroom. But bear in mind that the temporary wall is hardly sound-proof should the mother-in-law come to visit.

GETTING IN

The 25 flats, including four penthouses, are spread over four floors. Prices start at £199,950 for 823 sq ft, rising to £430,000 for the 1,410 sq ft penthouse with a rooftop garden and conservatory. But do not expect a breath-taking vista.

Although the block is only five minutes from the waterfront, the lack of a sea view is a little disappointing.

GETTING OUT

Trains take you to London Waterloo in one hour and 15 minutes. Driving to the capital takes a little longer along the M3 and M27. Southampton international airport, which has its own railway station, offers flights to major European cities. Keen yachtsmen can make it to Cowes on the Isle of Wight in only 25 minutes by ferry.
