Very interesting question and one I’ve grappled with for some time. There are still those who would (almost) rather die than have anything fake pass through their portals. Myself, I think that faux has its place.
Interior designers who would once have fainted at the very notion of artificial flowers now tell me they prescribe them for clients who are so busy travelling the world that buying fresh flowers is a chore. They like to come back to a home that doesn’t look too spare and unlived-in, and the right sort of artificial flowers can help quite a lot. I’ve lugged back wooden tulips from Jakarta (gorgeous – more like sculptures than flowers), paper blooms in eye-popping oranges and pinks from Johannesburg and big branches of fake blossom from Pottery Barn in New York.
Mostly, I think they were attractive because they didn’t look too obviously pretend-real. However, there are now artificial flowers that look so divine in themselves that it’s hard to maintain a critical stance. If you can, visit Fake Landscapes at 164 Old Brompton Road, London SW5 (www.fake.com). It is a wonderland filled with every conceivable kind of artificial plant, grass and flower, and is just as pretty as any normal florist (though it has to be admitted that one misses the smell). You can take in pots or vases for the staff to fill.
Turn also to Verynice2 (www.verynice2.com), where you’ll find the amazing Sia range of artificial flowers (everything from orchids to hydrangeas, plus plenty of greenery) and lots of pictorial tips on how to use them. Bloom & Green (www.bloom.uk.com) is another fantastic source, whether you want a dainty single stem or a lavish bouquet. Finally, Ambius (www.ambius.co.uk) makes flowers in silk – a single tulip in a vase looks especially chic. All you need to remember is to change the flowers with the seasons and wipe them regularly.
