The Canadian-born designer has been at the top of fashion’s It list since his London-based label was launched in 2006. Previously Roland Mouret’s right-hand man, he has won the British Fashion Council’s New Generation award for four consecutive seasons. His signature look is androgenous tailored designs, and he has dressed Mick Jagger and Bono, among others. His latest project is a commission from Chivas Regal, the Scottish whisky company, to design a limited-edition hip flask.
In your opinion, what makes good design?
A lack of fear.
What item do you wish you had designed?
The Tube map — it may give a distorted view of London, but it sure looks good.
Who is your mentor and why?
My good friend Roland Mouret. I met him while studying for my MA at Central St Martins. He was there as a guest lecturer and asked me to work with him during the summer break. After many years of working together, he’s as supportive as ever.
What single thing sums up your style?
Razor-sharp. I’ve always been into that dark, tailored look.
What is the one piece of clothing that always makes you feel good?
Anything in cashmere. I’m always cold and it keeps me feelin’ fine all year round.
What is your grooming ritual?
I bathe in milk — like Cleopatra.
City or country, which do you prefer?
I’m a city boy now. I come from the country and I ain’t going back.
What’s your biggest regret?
I never have regrets. Just finish the Beaujolais and move on.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Copious amounts of Chivas 25. But it takes a fair amount to make me feel guilty — I have an underdeveloped sense of when to feel it.
How do you spend your down time?
Trying to develop a sense of guilt.
What is your best trait?
My athletic ability.
What is your worst trait?
I bend the truth.
What causes you sleepless nights?
I’m a constant worrier. When there’s nothing to worry about, I worry about that.
What five words would your friends use to describe you?
A pain in the butt.
How often do you go out?
I’m out right now, honey — in the pub.
Who would be your dream party guests?
Marlene Dietrich, Johnny Cash and Batman.
What is your most diva-like demand?
How dare you call me a diva!
What is your home comfort?
My slippers: in sheepskin from Canada.
What ambitions have you not yet achieved?
Every day, I achieve something. It’s important always to meet today’s ambitions, leaving room for tomorrow’s.
What show is series-linked on your Sky+?
Damages. Glenn Close is the best bitch on television.
Phone or text?
Call, if I’ve got the time. I have very large fingers — it makes texting tricky.
What was the last book you read?
French Vogue. Although my French isn’t that good, the photos tell a good story.
What would you save if your house was on fire?
My cat Pepe le Moko — and a few pairs of my favourite shoes.
What is your all-time fave shop and why?
The bookshop at the Louvre. It’s the first place I go to for inspiration for the next collection.
Fave place and why?
Anywhere along the River Thames. I love to sit there and look at the London skyline.
If you could buy only one interiors label to deck out your house with, what would it be?
Alannah Currie (misspokeno.com). My penchant for taxidermy never tires.
Name your favourite website?
Net-a-porter.com — the chicest place to spend your e-pounds.
What were the last three things you bought?
A cappuccino, a salad and a diamond-encrusted Chanel clutch.
What piece of advice would you give others?
Hard work always pays.
