I'm more into GSI (Get Someone In) than DIY but in these straitened times paying a builder seems a bit reckless, so DIY is back on. My current big project is a sliding door between the kitchen and annexe. I first tried to put it up in June, but after several frenzied attempts to drill a hole in the concrete beam above the door I gave up. Then Bricks & Mortar asked me to review the new Bosch Uneo so I decided to give it another go.
The Uneo is one of those smart all-in-one tools: in this case a drill, rotary hammer and screwdriver. It's also cordless, has an ingenious fast-change chuck and looks like a ray gun. But does it do the job?
I go for the tough option first - the concrete beam. Bosch boasts that the Uneo's pneumatic hammer has a “single impact force of 0.9 joules at 4,800 blows a minute”. I don't know what that means but I do drill four deep holes in no time, so it must be something good. Next I insert the screwdriver tool, commandeer an unwilling accomplice (my wife) and attach the door's sliding mechanism. You can vary the Uneo's speed with the power button, which takes some getting used to, but in screwdriver mode it works a treat. If you mess up you hit the reverse switch and the bit removes the screw in seconds.
After much cursing - the door is heavy - we manage to fasten it to the sliding mechanism and, voilà, job done. Well, almost. It still needs some work but with my clever Uneo it shouldn't take long. As a reluctant handyman, I couldn't ask for more.
Hero's verdict: Four stars
