Where can I source small hand basins?

An extra bathroom will almost always add value to your home, but squeezing in an extra hand basin if space is tight can be difficult. However, a new generation of sleeker, slimmer hand basins means you can now fit one (subject to plumbing setup) into the awkward space under the stairs.

B&Q (0845 850 0175, www.diy.com) does a small basin, designed to fit into a corner: the Barcelona costs £64, plus £49 for the pedestal. Colourwash (020 8830 2992, www.colourwash.co.uk) also does a niche corner basin for £120. Wall mounted, it measures 350mm x 350mm.

Ideal Standard’s Space Micro Basin is great for a tiny space, measuring only 400mm wide and 200mm deep. The basin has two tap holes, is available with or without a curved panel underneath, and costs from about £75. The company (0800 590 311, www.ideal-standard.co.uk) also has a small, basin called “white round” (W400mm x D390mm) for £98.94.

The Delineo from Sottini (0800 591 586, www.sottini.co.uk) is a bit pricier at £182, but has a pleasing tapered shape. Bathstore (08000 232 323, www.bathstore.com) has a new range, Euro, that includes Trio, a slab-type basin with a softly curved oval interior incorporating a flat area to one side for a single tap, and underneath a chrome bar to neatly hang a towel. Simple yet very chic, it costs £129.
