We are accumulating remote controls that look ugly and clutter up the living room. Is there a simple solution?

Almost every piece of electronic hardware comes with an infrared remote, so it is easy to end up with a clutch of unappealing controls. You need a universal remote that allows you to control all your equipment from one handset. The Logitech Harmony range starts at £55 (01753 870900; www.logitech.com). The Philips Pronto TS9600 (020 7949 0069, www.pronto.philips.com) is a good alternative, but if you are not technologically literate, you may need professional help to set it up.

You can even keep all audiovisual devices out of sight – in a cupboard, say – and use an infrared extender from Russound (01242 539100, www.russound.com). Its “magic eye” transmits signals to a range of audiovisual equipment. Prices start at £99. For ultimate control, Crestron (020 8439 7272, www.crestron.co.uk) has a system that controls just about any electronic device via programmed touch panels. Prices are on request.
