A Cancer Research UK garden, complete with a 100ft (30m) sculpture of curved oak ribbons, has been voted one of the public’s four favourites at the Chelsea Flower Show.
The garden, inspired by the charity’s “Together we will beat cancer” campaign, was short-listed for the BBC RHS People’s Award 2007.
Unlike the medals awarded by selected Royal Horticultural Society judges – all experts in their field – the People’s Award finalists and winner are chosen entirely by a public vote.
The garden’s designer, Andy Sturgeon, said: “Focusing on the word ‘together’, the garden has been designed so that all the various elements – hedges, paths, benches and so on – are linked and lock together.”
The other show garden finalists are the Westland Garden, designed for a retired couple by Diarmuid Gavin and Stephen Reilly, and Celebrating 100 years of Hidcote Manor, by Chris Beardshaw – both of which have won Silver Gilt Flora medals this year.
The gold-medal-winning Fetzer Sustainable Winery Garden, containing a vineyard, has also been nominated.
The designer Kate Frey said: “My inspiration for the garden dates back to 1988 when Fetzer converted all its vineyards to sustainable farming methods – rejecting synthetic chemicals and instead using weeds and compost to promote conditions for grape-growing.
“At the time people considered it rather radical but now it’s a fact of everyday life.”
The overall winner will be announced tonight on BBC Two, after the last day of the show. Voting closes at 12.45pm today and can be done through the BBC website.
