- Hardy fuchsias now need a sort-out. If the stems are sprouting high up, shorten them back to a strong shoot and snip out any weak and dead stems. If most of the stems are dead, cut the plant down to a few inches in height (F. magellanica ‘Tricolor’, ‘Riccartonii’ and var. molinae)
- Nip out the leading shoots of fuchsias and pelargoniums contained in pots, to make them bushy
- Take a look at self-sowers in paving cracks (Erigeron karvinskianus, Corydalis lutea, Welsh poppy, bronze sedges). Too many? Cut some of them out, or burn them off
- Houseleeks (Sempervivum) lost their roots? It’s caused by vine weevils. Replant in fresh soil and treat sound potfuls with nematodes or Provado
- Divide old, congested clumps of dog-tooth violets (Erythronium dens-canis), and spread them thinly in areas of rough grass.
