- Prune buddleia. Be tough and don't worry about losing some new shoots. Cut off all of last year's 6ft wands with secateurs, and use either loppers or a saw to produce an open-centred framework of older branches. Bolder cutting means later flowers but a much more manageable bush

- Time for enthusiasts to scarify shabby lawns congested with old grass and moss. Take off the results with a rotary mower and grass box

- Cut back pollard willows as soon as the catkins are done. Trees and shrubs such as this, which are cut hard back every spring to make large amounts of new growth, should all be given a really generous dressing of a general-purpose granular fertiliser, such as Growmore, at this time.
