It has one of the most famous and photographed doorsteps in London, but few people bar family and celebrity friends have seen beyond the glossy black front door into the private sanctum of Sienna Miller. But now the actress and former girlfriend of Jude Law is so fed up with the constant attention from the burly cameramen with zoom lenses who camp out on her street that she has put her home on the market for £995,000.
Miller, 27, bought the Victorian house, on a quiet lane near Marylebone, in 2007. The trendy conversion contrasts starkly with the neighbouring council estates, but is a fitting reflection of her personality — a mix of laid-back bohemian charm and sensuous indulgence, with a hint of order and ambition.
Behind an unassuming exterior, the house apes loft-style living, with its bare or white-painted walls, industrial-style radiators and double-height rooms, but the effect is softened by colourful throws, comfortable squashy sofas and a recessed gas fire.
The open-plan living room-cum-kitchen is the perfect space for entertaining or retreating from the world. It is decorated with an eclectic blend of antiques and foreign artefacts, including Moroccan lamps and tribal masks from the jungles of South America.
The walls are full of artwork, including an original pencil sketch of flying swallows by Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick, whom Miller played in Factory Girl, and a rather dark self-portrait done when she was an angst-ridden 12-year-old. The bookshelves contain volumes on yoga and first-edition poetry collections by Allen Ginsberg and Charles Bukowski. Another set of shelves showcase Miller’s collection of hats: wide-brim fedora, beanie and top hats. There is also a 1983 Gibson guitar that once belonged to the musician Jeff Beck: Miller bought it for £1,000 with her first pay cheque.
The guitar is undoubtedly going with her, but the new owner may be able to negotiate to keep a few key pieces, among them the trestle table with a brushed metal top, the floor-to-ceiling red velvet curtains and a carved pillar crowned with a set of antlers.
The top two storeys are pokier and more quirkily laid out, with steps here and there to a galleried study area and various mezzanines that have proved useful storage spaces for clothing and for stashing her many freebies. There is a smallish bedroom, with a girlie wrought-iron bedstead and a tiny en-suite shower room, and up a further flight of stairs in the attic is a second bedroom with an adjoining bathroom. It is here that the famously bedraggled Welsh actor Rhys Ifans — whom Miller subsequently dated — camped out when his house-boat flooded.
The centrepiece of the 2,095 sq ft pad is the purpose-built Moroccan tiled room in the basement, with an authentic Turkish bath and separate sauna. The brightly coloured 5ft square sunken pool, installed by the previous owner, an interior designer, is surrounded by mirrored walls and two alcove seating areas piled high with cushions — just perfect for lounging around after wallowing in the steam bath and relaxing with a mint tea.
These days, though, the boho queen, who last week joined 30 celebrities, including Sting and Elle Macpherson, in boycotting the Michelin-starred restaurant group Nobu for serving bluefin tuna — is reluctant to fill the pool, as it is against her green philosophy. She has installed low-energy light bulbs, switches off all her appliances before she goes to bed and takes showers instead of baths.
She is also keen to grow her own vegetables, and is starting to get her hands dirty in the garden of her new home. Pity — a few rotten cabbages might have been useful in dealing with the pesky paparazzi.
