In this week's podcast Nicola Christie meets a true legend in classical music, the composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, in advance of his all-Janacek Prom with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He talks about the experience of playing to the hecklers in the Albert Hall arena, why concert life needs a shake-up to keep music relevant, and why after decades of writing and interpreting new works he is convinced that atonal music is still the only way forward.
Also in the week's programme, Nicola talks to the The Times chief dance critic, Debra Craine, on why the music for Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty - all three hours of it - is fit for the concert hall, and why it's become one of the best-loved ballet scores. And we hear a section from a new work inspired by The Sleeping Beauty, composed by Prokofiev's feisty grandson Gabriel.
Plus listen to the The Times classical music editor, Neil Fisher, on the best Proms to hear this week.
