Stereolab: Chemical Chords

Eighteen years into their career, it can be rather easy to take Stereolab for granted. Their schtick has a comfortable familiarity these days. Taken in isolation, though, this 11th album is a jaunty pleasure.

Elaborate Francophone pop dominates, with one masterpiece of fuzz-heavy synthrock (Pop Molecule) and a penultimate track (Daisy Click Clack) that could have been a novelty hit in 1971. Nice, too, to see that Laeticia Sadier's lyrical concerns have spread beyond political philosophy, to incorporate, on Silver Sands, the morally improving hobby of gardening.
