TRACK: Will O The Wisp.
WHO: Lord Auch.
WHAT: Gorgeously gloomy rock'n'roll.
THE HYPE: 'They have a certain renegade loner feel to them' - Artrocker
WE SAY: Keen indie fans will probably remember Leeds band Black Wire. Their song Hard To Love Easy To Lay was hugely popular in London's alternative clubs back in 2005. At the time, the cocky young art rockers looked set to have an exciting future ahead of them. However, they seemed to fade into obscurity instead - along with many other promising bands of that era, such as Negative For Francis and Kubichek! to name just a couple. Meanwhile, the Kaiser Chiefs are set to release their third album. I'll leave you to make your own mind up what that tells us about the music industry.
Anyway, back to the present… now former Black Wires Si McCabe and Danny Prescott - along with guitarist Liam W - have got a new band, Lord Auch. Unless you did a bit of research, you'd never guess the two were related. The former incarnation specialised in chaos and jerky, kick-butt riffs, while Lord Auch have got a confident, mature, tight, polished edge to them.
Wil O The Wisp combines Fifties rock'n'roll with the kind of euphoric gloom that's characteristic of Arcade Fire. It's also no surprise to discover the band list Birthday Party as one of their influences.
Singer Si engages you with his sombre Elvis-esque voice, while the song gallops along to a frenetic riff and tight beat - interspersed with Shadows-style twangy guitars and great harmonies. Then the song stops and slowly builds the dynamics up step by step, but rather than heading for a crashing crescendo, it fades out pleasantly like an old-fashioned pop record.
There are many influences at play here, but the result is far from a mess - instead it's something very unique and enigmatic that surely deserves a bit of industry fuss and attention. Black Wire is dead, long live Lord Auch.
IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: The band's debut single was released earlier this year - the double A-side The Dig Inn/Grass Fingers is out on Young And Lost Records and is available for download from www.junodownload.com/artists/Lord+Auch .
WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Wil O The Wisp isn't on release, but you can listen to it over at the band's MySpace.
