If his aim was to be noticed by America, Russell Brand more than achieved his goal last night as he ranted that President Bush was a “retarded cowboy” while hosting the MTV awards.
The British comedian, who is a virtual unknown in America, left the crème of the music world stunned as he championed Barack Obama, ran down George Bush and made lewd jokes about the Christian pop band Jonas Brothers.
Ignoring the renowned patriotism of Americans, Brand told the Hollywood audience they must vote for Barrack Obama “on behalf of the world”, before insinuating that America had lower standards than Britain when it came to picking leaders.
"Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president.
"But I know America to be a forward thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years?
"We were very impressed. We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors."
Members of the studio audience, including Britney Spears, who was making a much-hyped comeback appearance, and Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus, looked horrified at Brand’s jokes.
American Idol winner turned chart-topper Jordin Sparks was so incensed by a joke about Christian band Jonas Brothers that she launched her own tirade at the host.
The teenage singer, who wears a ring symbolising her belief in abstaining from sex until marriage, snapped at Brand: "I just want to say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and girl wants to be a slut, OK?"
Brand, a self-confessed sex addict known for his huge hair and boundary-pushing act, apologised for the crack but later went on to make another bawdy joke.
Yet to really break America, despite a role in spring rom-com Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Brand was considered an odd choice for host, a role previously filled by A-listers including Jack Black and P Diddy.
Acknowledging the criticism, Brand joked about his lack of fame in the US: "My persona doesn't really work without fame. Without fame, this haircut could be mistaken for mental illness."
Today, his name is much better known. While the event was hyped as the platform for Spears’ return, Brand almost overshadowed the pop singer in the post-awards press coverage.
The LA Times wrote: “The 2008 VMAs were poised to mark the return of Britney Spears. Instead, they will go down in history as the night when that English guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall almost made the Jonas Brothers cry.”
The New York Times were appreciative of Brand’s turn, saying the “manic, intelligent English comedian, injected the show with politics (pro-Barack Obama), raunch and philosophical musings.”
But others were less charitable. The Chicago Tribune wrote that “Nobody quite knew what to make of the opening monologue of wild-haired host Russell Brand”, while MTV’s online message boards were besieged by confused and outraged Americans.
One message read: "Why is it that Brits think the rest of the world doesn't get their humour? The myth is a tired excuse for lack of humour."
Another said: "Russell WHO? I didn't realise this show was an Osama (sic) campaign rally. This British nobody looks like he was pulled from the ranks of the homeless - with his unshaved look, rats' nest hair-do and foul mouth."
Mark, London, UK said this: Jonathan Ross, a British comedian, gets paid £6mil ($9mil) p.a. Please find me a para-Olympiad, or better yet, an American Comedian with that salary.
Will Ferrell made $20 million for Talladega Nights alone.
I like Brit comedy. We are just more patriotic over here.
wendy, san diego, ca, USA
i love love love Russell, cheer up people, he's a comedian, its comedy.....hints in the title. You can take the piss out of Bush, but noone else can? he just says what the rest of the world thinks :) learn to take a joke x
Jodie, San Antonio, Spain
"This guy isn't famous today and he won't be tomorrow... Being famous in Britain is like being a special olympics gold medalist.
rick, chicago, US"
Jonathan Ross, a British comedian, gets paid £6mil ($9mil) p.a. Please find me a para-Olympiad, or better yet, an American Comedian with that salary.
Mark, London, UK
haha I didn't hear about this but it sounds amusing..... any Americans that got offended should just calm the hell down! They shouldn't get so riled up over one persons comments, it's rediculous! Russell Brand is awesome, I respect him for shaking things up a bit.
Tom, Ledbury, England
I love Russell Brand, he is absolutely hilarious and if America can't appreciate that and want to be all uptight then that's their problem!
Kim, Fife,
it comes down to one thing some american are afraid of outspoken inteligence. ignorance is bliss just keep in ur bubble america
lukekelly, halifax, England
Russell Brand is a hero. I love him.
Chigsy, London, England
I dont think russell brand is unbelievably funny but hes quite good. I think america has no culture and comedy there is predictable and humourless. although vote obama or youre rascist is illogical i think its time for a change. americans are so bloody christian its sick. promise rings are laughable
John, Britain,
I think the US needs to lighten up and learn how to take the mick out of their own country like the Brits do.
Sheree Warwick, England,
I think American culture is arrogant, destructive and naive. This report and some of these comments go to prove that. You may have got where you are today a new and fantastic ideal, but those idealists are now dead, replaced by the MTV generation.
Robbie, London, UK
Russel Brand is hilarious, not everybody may get his sense of humour, but he was only joking around. America really needs to lighten up and be able to laugh at themselves once every often.
Stephen, London, UK
I love Russell Brand ever since I first discovered his radio show.
I absolutely have to say he did well in hosting the VMAs, not everyone has to like his kind of humour, of course, but I really loved the way he made the world see what's his personal opinion.
America just has to live with that.
Hannah Lydia, Hildesheim, Germany
A: that was not funny
B: Americans, who cares, lighten up, it's just a (bad)joke
C: i you realy want to see retarded politicians, go to Belgium
Delphine Verhaeghe, Belgium,
By his behavior, is Bland trying to disprove evolution and also make the case for abortion?
John, Edinburgh, UK
the Bush 'joke' was too obvious to be funny. What I find funny is that people are being offended by his performance If you thought his comments/jokes were low then, remember, MTV thought you would love this, then that must mean they have quite a low opinion of all you sensitive souls.
james, norwich, UK
Russell Brand is fantastic. His sense of humour is world class he has the guts to say what everyone is thinking regarding politics etc
donna, Edinburgh , Scotland
Just wait, Russell, until you see what the not-so-divine Sarah has in store for the world. "Armed Madhouse", indeed!
Totto, Lake Oswego, US
yes, I agree that Bush is the village idiot of global politics, but he is still "our" village idiot...he is beyond humor; it approaches shame that he is our president - that's what the reaction to the comedian's comments are about - everyone just wants him out of office..no need to remind us of him
Mark, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
man ....
that second admendment thing is starting to feel good right now !
t man, chicago,
Anne Nottingham,
If Russell Brands speaks good "English" and his tasteless humor reflects current Brit tastes, then I am so glad I no longer live in the UK. Please send good comedians to the US, in future, so we can laugh with them and not at them.
Ian, Madison, USA
Bill Miami, he was speaking something called English, where the words awesome, rad, yeah, hey, honey and ma'am are not the extent of our vocabulary.
Anne, Nottingham,
Americans. Listen. If you keep sending annoying specks of life like Mariah Carey and Chris Rock over to us then we'll send over Russell Brand. *wink * Oh and if McCain wins the presidency were all doomed anyway so you might as well laugh at the brit with the crazy hair first. He says what you think
Natalie , Plymouth, UK
Dan, NJ, USA:
It wasn't a house Russel Brand was visiting: it was a MTV Award show? Obviously some of the outrage we have witnessed here is expressed by American citizens who cannot tell the difference between their country and a publicity stunt...
Lydia, Camberley, UK
Bill, Rockwood - and by saying "tell you in person" I assume you really mean "shoot you"?!
andrea, london,
No one in America laughed because we couldn't understand what he was saying. He needs to learn to speak properly. He wasn't funny he was annoying.
Bill, Miami, USA
If us Brits cannot laugh at ourselves, why are shows such as Shameless, Little Britain and the Royale Family so popular? Charlie/expat, you must be living in a hole, lots of US comedians have done such, only not at an awards, Chris Rock being an example. Bloody funny too.
Anne, Nottingham,
Lighten up. After the last few years we have had on both sides of the Atlantic we need all the laughs we can get.
James, Manchester, UK
SP from London - Tom Green is canadian! We have to take the blame for that one...
Grahame, ottawa, canada
America, we don't judge you based on our experiences of Paris Hilton or Tom Green or any of the other revolting 'celebrities' we've seen come from your 'great land of the free'. Grow up, realise you're not the centre of the universe, stop overreacting to the most minor of slights.
SP, London, UK
yes charlie/expat, it WOULD be funny. I love how there are all these people saying 'you wouldn't find it funny if a US comedian came over and started ridiculing the UK'- er, YES, WE WOULD! (providing the jokes were good!). That's why we think it's so odd the US can't take a joke...
jo, London,
Hahahaha - I love this man!
Russell Brand is a genius!
Rebekah, Swansea, Wales
I seem to remember a few years ago that the Australian cricket team organised a comedian to dress in drag and send up HM The Queen at a dinner with the England team. The England team walked out of the 'do' and the UK media howled in protest.
So where was your famous sense of hunour then?
Mark, Berkhamsted,
Charlie from LA,
To carry on with that theme the American Comedian will pronounce the following:
"Is it true that half of British men are gay and the other half cannot satisfy their women?"
I'm sure everybody would find that hysterical but if the off chance they don't - UK cannot laugh at them...
JIm H , Taipei , Taiwan
Anthony, have you been living with your head in a bucket for the past few years?
Kate, London, UK
Much ado about nothing. Nobody watches the MTV awards except the kids and few of us have any idea who Brand is. Would agree that sometimes we come across as a humorless bunch, but keep in mind that this is the internet, and as such, seems to attract crackpots from both sides of the pond.
Jim, Pennsylvania, USA
I would love to see an American comedian host the Brit awards. Especially if dressed like a reject from The Darkness.
Then he could open up on British incompetence, pompous arrogance, lack of leadership skills and general inability to communicate without alcohol. But it would be funny, right? Right
charlie/ expat, los angeles, US
Well someone needed to bring the Americans back down to planet Earth. Well done Russell for having the guts to say what he did.
Jason, Weybridge, UK
Well, I'm a true Brit and I don't know who Russell Brand is, he is not famous in the UK.
I thought he was an embarassing moron and should never have been on TV. As for being a comedian, what did he say that was funny.
Antony, Leicester, UK
'I have lived in the UK for 20 years and can attest to the high standards here. In a million years, people like George Bush could never hold an executive position in this country. '
kamisese
Are you living in Dreamland? The psychotic G Brown and his acolytes make Bush look like a great statesman
Jeff Hyman, Peyia, Cyprus
I read a comment comparing Bush with our former "phony tony", which i couldn't help but laugh at. Tony Blair did a good job for a long time, and yes we would all trust him with "a pair of scissors" unlike our current un-elected PM. Dont mock Blair - he is not like Bush "yo blair" at all.
jennie, east midlands, uk
Trust me when I say it was the McCain/Palin supporters who sent the whackos and thinly veiled racists to your website.
Luke, Atlanta, USA
Damn uppity brit comedians making jokes about America IN AMERICA!
(That was sarcasm)
(preferably read in Homer Smpson style voice)
Adam Caudill, Liverpool, UK
With Brands views I predict he will be a prime time anchor for the nightly news with either ABC CBS or NBC. Another comment I have to make is about all the British emcees we have on about every prime time show. Is America so short of talent that we have to import it. Wake up America.
C21-Lady, Rancho Cucamonga, America
In my experience many Americans have a problem accepting how the rest of the world sees them (ie not best and not perfect) and can't accept an ounce of criticism, even a humourous friendly dig. Russell was merely saying what many think - Bravo! Enjoy a laugh at yourself America - its good for you!
Michael, Norwich, UK
The reader responses from the USA are pure gold.
Which right wing reactionary USA web site sent all of these redneck readers here?
Mark, Brisbane, Australia
The Queen costs the taxpayer all of £0.60 a year.
Hardly a burden.
But seriously plenty of comedians joke about other countries. It's not abuse as some would think and to be honest Bush can't even speak English coherently and believes medieval religious dogma has a place in contemporary politics.
Kieran, Halifax, U.K.
Curious to see if an American (especially an American) came to the UK and did a stand up something like this:
"Whats with you people? You have a Queen? You let an old lady run around playing dress up and you pay for it. You must have a sense of humor"
You banned parts of S.Park for the same thing.
JIm H , Taipei , Taiwan
well done Russell, Well done.
tony, cardiiff, wales
I have to say while I got a good laugh at Russells performance (and I don't usually care for him) the comments here are even better.
Americans have a real problem with blind patriotism, it actually borders on dangerous nationalist sentiment not seen since the Soviet Union.
Fraser, Aberdabby, United Kingdom of people with a sense of humour
Brand was an obnoxious moron, and neither clever or funny.
MtV is the real loser...lame. I turned it off
David Johnson, Tempe, USA
For the PC brigade: had Brand said 'mentally retarded' then maybe some of you would have a point. According to the report he said "retarded cowboy". Retarded has a more general meaning, please look it up if you're unsure.
Finally, who would he trust with a pair of scissors with a hairdo like that?
Chris, Lancashire,
I cant believe Russell actually said all that and to think I thought he was a senseless sex-maniac all this time! You've shocked me Mr. Brand and you have gained a your first ounce of respect from me. We Brits are mad and love it!
Amir, Coventry, United Kingdom
Well, I really don't see Mr. Brand as any different or worse from the thousands of other comedians that make a living insulting Bush. I think the media is just making a big deal out of this whole thing. And I do think the Jonas Brothers had it coming to them. Someone had to denounce those pathetics.
Craig Stilson, Newport Beach , USA
These comments are hilarious - I don't even know where to start... John Lynch from Mooresville - you have hit the nail on the head: THAT'S WHY the rest of the world disparages the US - you never even listen to the possibility that other countries/people have a point against the US! ps I'm not a Brit
Charlotte, London, UK
Its a guy seeking publicity and he got it. Luckily for you guys he's probably already booked for next year!!. Not a fan myself. Hopefully you'll all vote for a president who reflects your beliefs and not one recommended by a comic. Also look out for the off button on your TV's
steve, Romford, UK
I found it amusing. While I don't completely approve of the word "retard", all in all, the monologue was biting and funny and it suprises me that Americans can take that sort of behavior from American comedians, but a British comedian saying these things seems to shock and outrage the masses.
Amy, Cookeville, TN, USA
There was only 1 "retard" on the stage that night, and it wasn't George Bush. You, Mr (Mrs?) Brand, are a coward. Hope you visit my little corner of the world someday so I can tell you in person.
Bill, Rockwood, TN, USA
Don't insult the mentally disabled, Brand. Bush is an immature out of control, rich chav, with a low-average range IQ, and probably early dementia, but..to call him "retard," is an insult to the mentally retarded! I've worked with the mentally retarded--they are ten times the human beings Bush is!
NG, NY state, USA
With the exception of the word "retard" I don't really think he's much worse than Sarah Silverman or other comedians who make money off of making fun of others. Jordin Sparks is an idiot for thinking that the issue of sexuality is so clear cut. These "tweens" are just nuts promoting theocracy.
Adrienne, Philadelphia, USA
I think Brand's sense of humour is great. Its original, witty&full of substance.Moreso than the dozens of cliche, commercially compliant comedians we laugh to everyday. I dont share any of his veiws, but I can appreciate it.Plus, not everyone is man enough to apologise. But he was. He's a good guy.
Nubla, Male', Maldives
David from London,
Just to let you know, using the term retard at all is offensive. It is not an accepted medical term for someone with learning difficulties, atleast not by anyone i know. Beleive it or not, saying someone has learning difficulties is probably the most acceptable term.
Max, Truro, UK
He's not a 'comedian'. He just uses the lowest common forms of wit, bad language and name calling. Everyone does it, he just gets paid to.
Phil, Atlanta, USA
Americans live in a country where it's not uncommon for someone who's never left the country, to proudly proclaim it's the best in the world. Several times over, and very, very loudly too.
Just an observation from my time living in Dallas

James-our "vile pursuit of oil"? Who was it , when pulling out of Palestine, turned their former police forts over to the Arab Legion, knowing they would shell women and children, and why? The Arabs had the oil.....oh, anyone know Bob Geldoff's opinion
of Bush? just curious........
Roger, Spfld.,IL, U.S.A.
I have lived in the UK for 20 years and can attest to the high standards here. In a million years, people like George Bush could never hold an executive position in this country. Everyone, whether openly or in the privacy of the homes have been talking about George Bush, vis-a-vis cretinism.
kamisese, manchester, UK
I remeber when GWB came to the UK and greeted TB with a very undiplomatic, "Yo, Blair!" I thought that was freaking hallarious, not picked up my burning torch and pitchfork.
I am a Brit living in the USA, paying US Taxes and married to a US Wife. I love the place, but seriously? Lighten up.
Joseph, Sonoma, CA, USA
Using the term retard as an insult is offensive. A 'retard' is someone born with a learning disability. Retard was a legitimate medical term for someone with this disability, and now it is hijacked for a term of abuse. People with LD are real people with real feelings and lives.
david, london, uk
why are there so many Americans even posting on this site? Surely this story was covered in an American newspaper where you can all get together and moan about the British.
Christine, London,
This is great ... at least one of those idiots at MTV music awards had the guts to tell the truth!!
Ron, Sacramento,
While I agree with Russell Brand...I am not sure about his remark that England would not trust G.W. with a "pair of scissors" after all, seems like England tolerated "Phony Tony" well enough
chabuka, Olympia, WA., United States
People act as if the whole fixed sherade that is the VMA's isn't just a big pot of politcal agenda in the first place. The Corporate controlled world of music is molded to make you think a certain way in the first place. Thats why music is terrible these days. Its unoriginal corporate art.
Danny, Austin, US
The comments here, OTT, aggressive, scared, reactionary, backward comments are truly frightening.
I honestly could never have believed that in 2008 there were still people in the world who could take a comedian's comments about one leader to such extreme extents.
USA: you get scarier by the day.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
I didn't tune into a musical entertainment program to listen to a political rally.
Russell Brand should keep his comments on American politics to himself and instead focus on being the show's host.
American TV presenters do not interject their views on British politics, government or royalty.
Craig, Boca Raton, Florida, USA
In certain parts of the Asian world, 'special' people are held in high esteem as they are believed to have a closer connection with their Creator.
Indeed, giving someone whose IQ can't be much higher than 100 control of the 'nuclear football' could well be responsible for mass-rediscovery of God.
Simon P, London, UK
you gotta love free speech! and isn't it wonderful for the show hosts to be so open minded to invite the hilarious and intelligent mr brand to do his thing. i haven't had this much fun since janet jackson's "wardrobe malfunction".
america- where's your sense of humour?! laugh a little!
David, London, UK
"A truly funny English comedian, with some class (Eddie Izzard) would keep his political views to himself, and do what he was hired to do." David King, Decatur, US
Hey David, to quote Eddie Izzard:
"It's not our place in Europe to encourage you, but vote for Barack or we'll start a war".
Matt, London, UK
And many yanks fell for it. Obviously Brand calculated that a little controversy would get him noticed
But the fact is that Bush IS one of the dummer presidents. Still over 100 IQ I believe, but that isn't saying that much. Clinton has (supposedly) a much higher IQ, for what it was worth
Andrew, Cambridge,
I think the comments from our American chums have proved RB's point. No wonder we threw the war of independance in round three.....
(No I can't stand the guy either - but get over yourselves!)
If you don't like him turn off - I do.....
James, Glasgow,
"I wonder when the U.S. readers will stop worrying what 3rd world countries (u.k) think of us? Judy, Phoenix, usa"
They will stop caring about what the UK thinks when they stop reading UK newspapers... when did you develop your interest in third world press?
Joe, brussels, belgium
If anyone thinks Russell Brand is representative of British humour or of Britain generally, I'm afraid they're sadly mistaken. He is so irritating, I have to switch channels when he comes on. I'm no great fan of Bush, but we can hardly claim to have a great record at electing leaders recently.
Nigel, Bishops Stortofrd, UK
A lot of what funny guys say, is what the majority of audience already thinks. The cracks about Bush and the U.S were fair. They knew what they were getting when they signed up Russell Brand. He delivered - period. God bless him I say, long may he prosper.
Garry Allen, Pighill, England
Before criticising Brits for never having a black man in the running for leader, I ask when America last had a woman premiere?
Margaret Thatcher was UK leader 30 years ago; oh how long it's taken the land of the free to catch up. Criticise as much as you like, we can actually handle it.
Paul, Hawley, UK
Very few people are defending Bush by quoting what he has done well and are more interested at directing attacks at Russell Brands appearance and misquoting what he actually said.
"I'm not a racist but only Americans can make jokes about America" seems to be the oxymoronic sentiment here.
Craig, Edinburgh, Scotland
Brand is in the Telegraph today saying that MTV have asked him to host again next year. Congratulations America, MTV will be thrilled with all of you boosting it's ratings, giving an award ceremony that no one has watched for at least 10 years, a boost. He'll get his own show soon if you keep going!
Janine, Manchester, England
Please grow up, over-sensitive Americans. It was only a comic who made a joke about your leaders. The British poke fun at their leaders every day.
Bilal Patel, London, UK
The outrage from some Americans would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic. Still this vocal outpouring from easily offended and humourless Americans I suppose shows why it is that 'edgy' British televison programmes such as Absolutely Fabulous have to be remade (dumbed down) for US audiences
Warwick, Tokyo, Japan
I wonder when the U.S. readers will stop worrying what 3rd world countries (u.k) think of us?
Judy, Phoenix, usa
Interesting observation while I was in Europe, most europeons despise the english. You need to get out more, your country is the second most hated country next to mine. Is socialized health care resposible for you teeth? Just kidding.......you brits need to lighten up and learn how to take a joke
Eric, tacoma, usa

We, Americans, need to understand that the British have earned
the right to participate in our election. They have fought with us
in every major war we have had including our very first war which
they let us win. Forget Brand, go watch a keira Knightley film.
john, placentia, california republic
Not a great fan of Russell Brand but this has made me warm to him. He baited the Bible Belt and they ran for it!
For the people declaring Russell's comments to have pushed them into voting for McCain,wow...just wow. Why should it matter what a comedian says on an entertainment channel?
V, London, UK
Russell Brand was SPOT ON! Too bad it takes a foreigner to say it! Americans have lost their minds and their spines. Makes me want to move to Canada...............
Katie, Garden Grove, USA
Why is he even given 15 mins of fame? But why is it that if Obama isn't elected then the US is racist? Just because he is black should not be the reason he should be in office.
Sue, Somwhere, USA
Freedom of speech is a great thing, so Brand gets to insult our President and the rest of you get to call Americans obese, stupid, no sense of humor, etc. Most Americans just take everything said about us with a grain of salt. What is sad is that freedom of speech has atrophied to Brand's level.
Mary Lorraine, Saint James, USA
Boo hoo! a British guy is picking on us! How uptight are the Americans? Freedom of speech? - hah! only if you say nice things. Perhaps the 90% of you who don't own a passport should get one and travel - broaden your world view. You'd be shocked to learn many countries dislike the USA.
Helena, Boston, USA
Freedom of speech, folks. Consider the alternative. All things considered, my first response was "Russel who?" Looks like he's had his 15 minutes. Insults are never really that humourous unless one can convincingly insult oneself, i.e. Basil Fawlty.
Marg, Richmond,
Why is anyone surprised at the American reaction? This is a country that is ready to vote in McCain on the basis he was a POW and Palin because she can hunt moose. It is not unpatriotic to lampoon the most stupid President of all time or to protest a misguided and illegal war. He deserves it.
James, Boston, USA
In certain parts of the world, 'special' people are worshiped as they are believed to have a closer connection with the Creator.
However, I can't help thinking that giving someone whose IQ can't be much higher than 100 control of the 'nuclear football' is a step too far...
Simon P, London, UK
Neal, Oklahoma - actually we do understand the ideaof electing those who govern us, for better or worse. 1) The royal family don't govern, 2) last time I looked dear Liz was not the king, and 3) we have a government just like you do...
Eleanor, Matlock, England
"the Jonas Brothers are awesome and wonderful people" - I'm sorry but i just had to stop reading right there. If you truly have that opinion i can't take anything else you say seriously. They are a great example of how easily Americans can be manipulated by the media. Open you eyes, and ears :)
xx
Tim, Ossett, UK
Come on, let's go for 1,000 comments. This is EPIC. Has anyone worked out who's winning this debate? Seems to me that Russell Brand's hair alone has made at least a couple of million Americans reach for their shotguns...
Ted , London, UK
Russell stated a fact... Whats the aggro for ?
John Taylor, London,
Reading all these comments from American people has made me realize why most US comedies are so tame. Blimey these people do not know how to laugh at themselves! Luckily someone over there is writing Family Guy - there is hope.
Fede, London,

Mark, Plymouth, UK
Russell Brand is hilarious! Unfortunately no one told him that American's hate to have a mirror held up for them to see both their faults and obsudity! We as a country have no sense of humor...I only have half of one because my mother is English! Lighten up America...it's called comedy!!
Delancey, Omaha, NE, USA
Brand DID NOT say that if you don't vote for Obama you are racist. He DID say that IF someone says America is not ready for a black president, then they are racist. A valid point.
As for the Bush joke, Brand struck a nerve. Lighen up guys!
Steve, Leeds, UK
I wonder if The most powerful man in the world actually cares what Russell Brand calls him. Doubt it.
Mark, Plymouth, UK
It's called cheap publicity. And it works.
Ashley Arnold, Slough,
Give it six months, you'll learn to love him, his big hair, tight trousers and long words..
Kathryn, Winchester, UK
Interesting that in another popular story on here Andy Murray is not being warmly received in his native land possibly in relation to comments he made about the England soccer team. Geez Englanders, lighten up.
Good man Russell, you've hindered not helped Obama.
Adrian, Navan, Republic of Ireland.
He was in America at the time. Free speech applies to everyone, regardless of what they use it to say. Personally I think the man has the right idea, but that's MY opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own.
Justin, Los Angeles, USA
Not being able to take a joke is a trait for a Nation to acquire.
David, Cardiff, UK
Josh, Rochester, USA - The UK was the only country to stand side by side with you after 9/11. Our soldiers have died supporting your country in Afghanistan and Iraq.
And is insulting our "charming" accent really the best comeback you have? Grow up.
Emma, Southampton, UK
People can respond any way they want to. America is a free country. If I don't like what a goofy looking guy on stage says, I can say it, and I can call him a moron if I want to.
Kathryn, Pennsylvania, USA
Absolutely hysterical stuff - just not in the good way :)
Personally I find Mr Brands sub-Bill Hicks runs pretty threadbare, but listening to the noise here I am now glad he went for it !
Chris, London,
I would ignore him. He always seeks attention by doing outrageous things. Don't take it personally.
Andy, Guildford, UK
McCain and Bush should be happy. With enemies like this, who needs friends?
Besides, where on earth does this guy get off calling ANYONE else a retard?
James, Santa Paula, CA, USA
You Americans don't realise is how much your politics affects issues in the rest of the world ie: climate change, war, economy. so of course we care about who you vote in!!!
To Josh,RochesterUSA (typical ignorance) Billions of £ spent helping your country in war, after 911. Get your facts right!
Emma K, Somerset, England
I'm not a fan of Russell Brand's but I though his rant was absolutely hilarious! I think everyone needs to lighten up, and just laugh at themselves a little bit.
Sean, Dublin, Ireland
This 'debate' is the most hilarious example of our American friends' inability to take a joke I have ever seen. Please, Americans, keep posting your misspelled, frantic, outraged and nonsensical tirades against Britain, Europe, Comedy, Brand and Blair. We're all wetting ourselves, really, we are!
Matthew Allen, Windsor, United Kingdom
My goodness, what an extraordinary number of comments.
I usually watch award programs, to help decide my choice of leader. It really does have an impact on my life and the future of my country.
Tea, anyone?
Air, Sussex, UK
Sorry Michael and Sarah,
But in the US it is considered extremely rude to visit someone else's home and insult the leader of the household. No matter how idiotic the man (or woman) is. It's just plain rude.
Dan, NJ, USA
Nice of Brand, who is obviously knowledgeable about pop-cultural retardation, being a spokesperson, to make a comment about Bush.
Lisa A, Greeley, CO
Ultimately, to the brits and others around the world who have a truly objective view of America ... i.e. not developed by overly-slanted viewpoints in the media ... THANK YOU for your sane, reasoned participation in this discussion. To the rest, people living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!
Angela, Dallas, TX, USA
Ah, yes. MTV. The same tasteful folk that brought us the 2004 Superbowl Janet Jackson exposure. This twit Brand is par for the course.
He is free to be as goofy-looking as he wants--but that tells us his thought process quality. His comments carrry as much weight as a small child's.
Terry L. Walker, Ladson, SC / USA
Wasn't aware that Brand was a spokesman for the British people, his comments are not original, ill thought out and not funny, but it appears that a lot of Americans seem to have used this as an excuse to make ill informed comments about Britain and Europe.
j whiteside, Lytham, Lancashire., England
"This guy is about as funny as the British Royal Family... spending hundreds of millions of dollars to fund a family that does absolutely nothing. Mention that in the UK and see if people are'nt offended. So much for british humor."
Royal bashing is a british way of life. Get over yourselves USA!
Rob, Bromsgrove, UK
Oh dear.... all it looks like is lots of nasty British people and nasty American people being nasty to each other. Can't we just all get on? Russ B - is just a silly lad trying to get a giggle - and getting it wrong - but it's causing such a hooha.....
Come on everyone - grow up. (Jess, 24)
Jess Ratty, St Austell,
Can we change our Freedom of expression to American Citizans only? I am tired of so called commedians to come here and bash the good in America and build up Obama. Wait Obama is running for World Emperor isn't he? So having a stupid Brit talk trash is part of his claim toEmperor.
Lorin Berry, Urbana, USA
Well done Russell Brand. Speak up for the vast majority of the world who are intelligent to know that God does not carry an assault rifle and make worlds in 7 days. I wouldn't expect a Bush voter to get his jokes. Understanding them requires a modicum of intelligence.
Cletus, Hong Kong,
LOL, reading these comments was actually funnier than the show. His act is meant to shock, its meant to be politically incorrect, its meant to offend you. Looks like its worked then!
Sean, London,
Given the disasterous consequences America's aggressive foreign policy has had for the rest of the world in recent decades, I'd say Brand and anybody else had a right to express their opinions on who will be your next president. You're all for free speech, unless it's something you don't agree with.
Adam, Winchester, England
Is anybody really outraged?
Stew, Philadelphia, USA
There are very few who can pull off political humor. Name calling and ridicule just don't work. Trying to make a political point and framing it in humor is cowardice. It didn't work for Dennis Miller, doesn't work for Bill Maher, and won't work for this guy. Use your brain!
Marc, Sacramento, USA
I guess that will be his LAST awards show. Leave it up to MTV to find a dolt like this to host. It gits me every time one of these "entertainers" trys to enlighten us with their "wisdom".
Shut up and sit down Russy boy. Americans don't need your small minded input into our affairs.
Randy W., Hosuton, Texas , USA
Odd how the British Accent is so amazingly sexy for women, but the men sound like little sissies. Cowboys like Bush and Cheney doen't listen to guys with teased long hair in a pair of leather tights....Thank God!!!
Matt, Holland, Michigan, USA
This guy isn't famous today and he won't be tomorrow. Being famous in Britain is like being a special olympics gold medalist.
Incidentally, he's right on all fronts.
rick, chicago, US
....this nobody with no talent tried to deliver a comedic line but had not the talent to do it. Poor devil, he needs to seek another line of work, seriously.
mariah, California, U.S.
Nick - we would have laughed.
Sarah Campbell, London,
Sorry Nick, but if Cedric the Entertainer came to London and did a bit about Margaret Thatcher & Alzheimers, we'd take it in the light it was meant. The fact that you debtor & aggressor of this world cant take a joke even after you inflicted the world with GW Bush twice in the last 8yrs in rich.
michael, Goodmayes, England
Brand is British but what he says isn't representative of the UK as he is an individual. If someone black commits a crime, does that mean you criticise all black people? If I judged the USA by some of the comments here I would never visit. Thankfully I am more open minded and intelligent than that.
James, London, UK
This clown is a nobody and another fine example of MTV's total lack of judgement.
In the 80's MTV used to be worth watching, now it's a channel that is never tuned into even by my teenage children.
MTV here is your clue...
1. Show videos!
2. Use your head while not stoned!
3. Show videos!
Loy, Peoria, USA
Great, here we go again with Brits sabotaging the cause for those of us in the US who want real change. The Guardian's Operation Clark County stunt in 2004 most likely put Bush back in the White House. Please do those of us here who are working for change a favor and stop interfering.
Roger, Chicago, USA
The only thing funnier than brands jokes is they way you chaps in America get offended so easily
American comics always crack bad taste jokes about our leaders, royalty and culture
But we can take a joke
Brand is playing you lot like puppets in the brand show, to the amusement of the world.
Tom, london, england
I'm really getting tired of Europeans lecturing the US about war.
God only knows how many times they've drug the world into their games and Imperialism.
My ancestors knew Europe sucked.
I could care less what another European thinks of my country or it's leader.
Dennis, Madera, USA
In typical fashion yet again the so-called civilised and tolerant people of america cannot take a joke.
I thought the antics of Russel Brand to be alot funnier than your governments violation of human rights at guantanamo bay, which by the by are still happening.
Darryll, belfast,
And I thought the British were supposed to have impeccable manners as they always looked down upon the crass Americans who had no manners.
I'm disappointed that audience members didn't show more integrity and character by standing up to denounce his horrid remarks. Shame, shame!
Jean, Houston, USA
Pat, what are you talking about where did he get his opinion from. All anyone would need to do is turn on the tv or look at the newspaper or follow history. GWB is a joke he has said and done off the wall things in his admin. only a blind supporter would continue to support him. Think about it!!!!!
JAMAAL, GOLDSBORO, nc
The only reason that particular crowd of Americans now don't like Russell Brand is because he's English, they've never heard of him and he has defaced 'the land of the free' by speaking his mind. What a joke.
Dan Jones, Wigan, England
Ok...Judging by these comments, Americans are apparently the most easily offended people on the planet!
LIGHTEN UP DEARIES. It was a JOKE...if a US comedian said something similar about Gordon Brown here, the audience would laugh a lot!
Jo, London,
Freedom of Speech is something I cherish, and Brand is allowed to speak whatever he wishes. Also, he is a comedian, and shock value is one of his comedic traits.
We cannot take ourselves so seriously all the time. Learn to laugh and take the joke for what it is. Even if it is off-putting.
steve, New York City, USA
Sorry, but I do not care what you Brits think of our President. Your "charming" accent doesn't make it any more plesant. We had lots of freinds when they flew planes into the WTC. Look what that got us.. "Oh, we feel bad for you!" "Use restraint" INACTION! Thats what we got from Europe.
Josh, Rochester, USA!
HAHAHAHA sheeeeesh he's only having a laugh!!
It's not like he seriously thinks George Bush is retarded, he just wants people to take a joke, have some fun!!
He insults not only our government but himself too, an awful lot!! It's not like he's actively against Americans!
x xxxx x
Holli, Devon, UK
Gary of Ferndale:
Scott is a man's name not a nationality. Your ancestors were Scottish or Scots.
The hypocrisy of the Americans is scary - its OK for Leno and Letterman to take a pop at GWB but it seems that anyone else who makes similar comments is insulting the flag, army et al.
Grow up USA!
Tony Campbell, Northampton, England
Let's face it. Americans are annoyed because, who is a Brit to tell us for whom to vote? It's not about free speech, it's not about insulting President Bush (although I blame MTV for that, not the comedian). Ask yourselves (our allies in the uk), if an American came to your country and on a nationally televised show called your leader a "retard" and told you who you should vote for, you would also being saying to yourself, "who does this person think they are." That is all.
Craig, North shore, USA
He had no right to say what he did. We are suppose to be like family, in that we are the only ones who can make fun of our own. For Americans to allow a foreigner to mock our Commander in Chief in our own country, is disgusting.
MTV had sold out a long time ago. As well as many of you.
Nunya, Independance, United States of America
Hmmm, let's see, tax cuts, supreme court appointments, surge in Iraq (which even the great and wise Obama admits was a good idea): not bad for a "retard"; but more to the point what does it say about the quality of his opposition, such as, for instance Mr. sex addict Brand?
Eric , Brighton, USA
Hmm, I'd say from the reaction over the pond that Mr Band may have touched a nerve!
Liz, London,
I think MTV probably paid good money fro Russell Brand and I think they got exactly what they wanted.
Russell Brand is really my kind of comedian well up to now- but guys get perspective - its comedy not political commentary..
Steve Field, Peterborough, UK
Oh so very funny....and true!! Weldone Russel, you made my day!!!!
Misha, Karolinka, the Czech Republic
lol at the sensitive Americans. Brand is a quality comedian, I wish people would just get his humour.
America get a grip.
butch, Cov, England
Brand was very funny and a great addition to the show. He is also very correct on Bush-McCain and the rednecks running the Nation.
tomas, butte, usa
So I guess that makes over half of the US retards?? Must be, if they voted for one. And if not obama, how about Bin Laden
Ron , Huntley, USA
More so than white American Democrats, Europeans seems to have so much White- Guilt and baggage.
Re. Russel Brand: What is so funny about name calling? How old is this guy?
What is so funny about ant-Christian remarks? Just imagine the outrage if it was about say, Muslims, Hindus.
Rudolf , Denver, USA
Hopefully not for much longer.
John, Liverpool, England
I am astonished at how over sensitive the majority of the commentors on this page are. Its crazy - insult my president -insult my country - insult me.
I read Brand's comments to an American friend of mine and he laughed like crazy.
Pride comes before a fall. I'm from "Great" Britain. I know!
Rob, Bromsgrove, "Great" Britain
It's over the top to judge all of Britain by the offensive remarks of one comedian. I love the British people. But please remember, most Americans don't care what Europe thinks of us, or our leaders. That's why my colonial ancestors just had to kick you out. Sorry, old chaps.
Tony, INDEPENDENCE, NJ, USA
Just one more reason to not vote for Barack Obama. If this English bezore (hairball) thinks Barack is the only leader we Americans should vote for then it tells me that we need to vote for McCain. This guy needs to go back home and his Mum needs to wash his mouth out with soap...or preferably lye.
Harry League, Baltimore, USA
This guy is a court jester, and is doing what jesters do....poking fun at the king, He has no place, however, endorsing a candidate on a music awards show.
A truly funny English comedian, with some class (Eddie Izzard) would keep his political views to himself, and do what he was hired to do.
David King, decatur, US
How many blacks are in the British government?how many in the French? German? I am not talking low-level civil servants, I am talking about cabinet ministers and such (or even PM). Oh I know - zero. And you idiots call us racist. You demand that we elect a black of dubious ability, but you don't.
Joel Weymouth, Pennsylvania, USA
I know that there are many Americans who do not share the stupid, ignorant views aired here. Bush was not elected fairly the first time. He bungled the response to 9/11. He has made the world a more dangerous place, and impoverished many of those posting here through huge tax cuts for the rich.
Cletus, Hong Kong,
THIS guy is calling Pres. Bush 'retarded'? WOW! Now heres a perfect example of why we need tighter immigration laws. Pull his visa and send this guy home before the Pro-Choice movement uses him to further their cause.
"Russell Brand: DON'T let THIS happen to YOU!"
- Planned Parenthood of America
Scott Bowling , Owensboro, USA
That's an insult to retards everywhere.
Tikbalang, Tampa, USA
Russell B is
Over here: a sometimes-funny-usually terrible comedian and luvvie, mildly amusing, essentially harmless.
Over there: an influential political analyst, prominent social commentator, sensationalist rabble rouser, establishment scourge.
Is he now just too important for Hampstead?
Faisal, London,
Lots of Americans call Obama a Marxist. By UK standards he is more right-wing than our conservative party. Are we're socialist? Is it a bad thing? Come and live here a while. You won't get shot but you might get stabbed which entitles you to a free hospital visit after a long wait. But I digress...
Nayan, Essex, UK
Aside from a reformed drug user criticising another reformed drug user (who happens to be US president), did anyone else notice the absurdity of Britney Spears winning 3 MTV awards for a video she wasn't even in? It was animated, for gawd's sake.
Mark Flap, Swanage,
Think of the actual nonsense the that 'retarded cowboy' has put the world through, and put things into perspective.
A few jokes, ill placed or not, are harmless. Not teaching your children about safe sex and is not harmless. Glorifying a 'star' who has herself glorified drugs, drink, divorce...?
jude, Bromley, UK
Chris Rock said the exact same thing about six months ago...
"In the latest issue of Life magazine, featuring Chris on the cover, Rock is asked, "Is this country ready for an African American president?" Rock answered, "It's ready for a retarded president, why wouldn't it be ready for an African
Frank Barich, baltimore, USA
Looking at these comments I must say that I am very happy that UK does not have the same type of patriotism as americans. American patriotism resembles more Russian and Chinese type of patriotism. Perhaps a flattering comparison?:)
Alex, London,
My God, how could that thing refer to anybody else as retarded? I guess he has no access to a mirror.
Ron, Columbus,
It's sad that, in this case, some Americans were unable to laugh at themselves, preferring to interperet Russel's monologue as a personal attack, rather than the insightful, daring satire that it is. And have any of them ever seen "The Brits" parodied on US TV? Such as in Miley Cyrus' show?
Robert, Manchester,
Wow, Scary Americans R US.
You have a lovely nation and some remarkable people but you let your patriotism get in the way of any collective sense of proportion.
Is Achmed The Dead Terrorist really the comedian of choice in the US right now?
Tony, Sheffield, UK
So i guess Brand has personally met Bush then? No? So i guess he came to his opinion ... um, how exactly? Media? Tv, newspapers? I'm sure that's unbiased.
I don't remember Geldorf coming to that same opinion?
Pat, Philadelphia,
Just look at Brand.
Chuck, Montana, USA
I will NEVER watch the MTV Awards again. The lack of taste is phenomenal, not to mention repulsive. How dare they bring someone like that to this country and let him degrade the US. How dare they turn the awards into a USA bash feast for degenerates.
dbs, Mass., USA
Every time a European trashes Bush or America, McCain/Palin get another vote. Please do continue.
Ryan, San Jose, USA
Myron Monk from NYC, Russell Brand is an effeminate man from the South East of England, he is not typical of all English men.
Too many people on both sides of the Atlantic taking cheap shots by using ill informed stereotypes, but why are Americans not asking why Bush is not respected globally.
j whiteside, Lytham, Lancashire., England
Jim, TR, USA
Al qaeda and Iraq? Are you serious?! Have you read or listened to an authoritative news report in the last two years?(perhaps that's why you needed to visit a British newspaper site) Or even 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart?
Inform yourself about theses things
Dee, London, England
Yes it was inappropriate. But U.S. citizens say stuff like that ALL THE TIME. No one is screaming about Colbert or John Stewart. What about Robin Williams who says "Our economy is go--oh, look at the kitty." when talking about Bush's attention span? And tell me you don't know what a Bushism is?
Tristan, Riverside, USA
Oh please. I have plenty of friends in the US who say worse things about our prime minister than Russell Brand did about theirs. This is a ridiculous reaction. I used to dislike him but i actually now salute him!
Sophie, Brighton,
The guys from 'Mock the week' etc make innappropriate comments (like JB's) and are hilarious. This is because they're subtle and witty in their execution. JB simply is not - hence why he is offensive. He is nothing more than an extravagant (the wrong kind) 'chav' and an embarrassment to Britain.
James, Hampshire, UK
relax! this is a COMEDIAN. your defensive reactions say much more about you and your draconian ideology than anything brand's performance says about him (or about britain which he in no way represents). so what if he attacks the president? or dedicated virgins? what happened to freedom of speech?
steen, Epsom, UK
I am just astonished that the leftwing PC-brigade is silent here. Using a derogatory term for people affected with a mentail disability can surely NOT be condoned....
Adrian, London, UK
Jim, TR, USA. You have got to be kidding me? There was huge personal cost, but that's on the part of every soldier and their family and friends. Bush is sitting pretty.
Tristan, Riverside, USA
It was the MTV music awards. Who cares?
gp, 'grove, uk
I'm English and I can't stand Russell Brand, mainly becuase he's annoying and secondly becuase he's just not funny.
I've never understood his populariy over here and probably never will. No great loss to me.
Neil Smith, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England
Jeremy Randolph, jokes re: the royals are funny but if you are looking at it from a cost point of view please remember they earn us more than they cost us - mainly due to yanks coming over to see the Palace while searching for some real history of their own. Brand's funny - you all just don't get it
Mark C, Baildon, GREAT Britain
Are you kidding? Look at this dope. Does he even look like he had half a brain. If he wants to call someone a retard he should look in a mirror. I heard only what has been on the news reports but if that's what he calls humor he will soon be sitting in the corner with a tin cup in his hand.
northstar, Killington, USA
Wow - what an outrage! Given that RBs whole show is based on being outrageous I guess he'll be quite happy.
Amazing reaction on here. Is this a balanced reflection of American opinion? If so I am astounded - u guys r a little scary.
Adam, Edinburgh, UK
Surely by reacting to Brand's statements in this way, you have helped to create the media hype he had hoped for when writing what he knew to be a contentious and insulting monologue... I doubt that speech was written because Russell is a devout Democrat...
Chris, London, UK
gad, what an oddball freak that slimy limy is anyway.( a case of the putrid cesspool calling a smudged tea cup dirty.)
jonah, halibit cove, usa
Jonathan Swift was right - irony is wasted on the stupid...
Ahmed, Bradford, UK
Bush is actually very intelligent. He's just not a good public speaker nor good in front of a camera.
There's a huge difference. Stop parroting what the good-looking, shiny news commentators say.
Jeff, Philadelphia, USA
Finally! Payback for the Smothers Brothers UK series all those years ago. There is a God! Well, possibly, perhaps, but probably not.
Martyn, calvia, spain
From an American point of view:
Bush is a TWICE elected President, Americans support him, we dont like everything he does, but the WORLD owes him a debt of gratitude for fighting and winning against Al Quiada at huge personal cost. Only ignorant fools out of touch with reality belittle that.
Jim, TR, USA
I can't believe all the aggressive comments against the UK from over the pond. You certainly need thicker skins if something like this makes your blood boil.
I've met Russell, he's a decent guy and he now has your attention.
DH, Newport, UK
I love how sensitive some of the people are on this story, way more funny than Brand. Lighten up he is not that big here (UK) and don't let him sway your vote either way (he is actually a conservative trying to get you to go against Obama). "You cannot insult my president" Free speach...no longer?
Danomites, Windsor, UK
I feel so sad for the mentaly retarted that they had to be compared to Bush.
Steve, Ohio, USA

You mean mentally retarded?

I guess we can put up with British idiots here since Britain has to put up with our idiot singers and actors when they cross the pond. I will continue to respect a country who had enough sense to elect Maggie Thatcher. Non illigitimi carborundum
goomba, Richmond, USA
God bless freedom of speech. If you don't like it turn the channel.
Saoirse, Gettysburg, PA, United States
It's a shame that the wonderful people of Britain are being misrepresented by posts on this site. There are many Brits who live in the spirit of Churchill & Thatcher. Let us not forget that if it weren't for that spirit we'd all be speaking German or Russian right now. Ready for Aramaic now???
John, Tulsa, OK, USA
I think the best use for Russell brand is to make bio diesel out of him right quick.
jonah dob, halibit cove, usa
What makes him think we trust George with scissors?
John, Pottstown, PA, USA
To clear things up, he didn't say that Americans who don't vote for America are racists. We said that people who say America is not READY for a black president are racist- which they obviously are. Stop trying to twist his words to meet your own complaints!
Stephen, Belfast, Ireland
"It's freedom of speech, yes. However, too many people believe that they should be able to say whatever vile things their minds cook up and be completely free of consequence. That's not how it works."
Er, Jarod, I believe that is EXACTLY how it works.
James, London, UK
Nick sorry...Strong Economy did you say with your own Govt bailiuing out your 2 top mortgage lenders so they don't fail and bring your whole economy to its knees....yeah Strong.....Righhhhttttttt......
Chris Ward, Coventry, uk
This is OUTRAGEOUS... Bush is NOT a COWBOY. Otherwise, the emcee seems spot on.
Chumley, Philadelphia, USA
Its actually pretty funny that the Brits can boost all the jokes at the American President's expense. Too bad their younger society has learned to mock and take advantage of their own government, that is the reason they drove Blair from office and cut and run in Basra ... no heart.
Sam, Baghdad, Iraq
He looks like Tiny Tim in leather. Russ enjoy your 15 minutes.
laz, Quincy, usa
I love the comments about how this is going to sway voters in the upcoming elections- if Americans rely on Russel Brand making retard jokes to inform their political choices they really shouldn't be allowed to vote in the first place...
Carrie, Bristol,
I trust Brand doesn't "speak" for all Brits. Personally, shame on MTV for inviting such a moron to host the always tasteless MTV awards show. That tells us all we need to know about "entertainment" in my country...
Leonard, Providence, USA
Takes one to know one. What a loser.
PJK, Falls Church, USA
now this from a once proud country that is so politically correct that it can't stop itself from being taken over my the hoards from north Africa and the middle east. Statistically, one-third of parlement members are mentally ill. Where is Winston when you need him?
Mark, Palm Springs, FL, USA
Come on America! I know you have a sense of humour.
This was just RBs style (though he genuinely dislikes Bush).
Seems your main problem is that a foreigner said it!
steve, watford, uk,
Umm OK, why do I want to hear a non American dis my leaders during a music awards show??
I want to hear music, and see sexxy young women in skimpy outfits. If i want political discourse I will turn on CNN or MSNBC. When I watch MTV I want to forget about my problems and be entertained.
Twit
Johnny Thomason, wilmington, USA
Yeah, the Libs here have the same problem. Bush is an idiot. Then they have to explain to the entire world how they keep getting beat by an idiot.
Er--must be an Evil Genius around here somewhere.
Er--must be Dick Cheney.
If we wanted to be Europeans, we'd live in Europe. BTW, Russell: Nice hair
Dave, Forest of Wake, USA
As a British citizen, who loves the British humour, I don't think Russell Brand is funny at all, I'm very unimpressed that he was chosen out of so many talented British comedians to get such a slot at the MTV awards.
Chloe, Leeds,
Bravo. Why can't people take things a little less seriously?
The economy has just officially been flushed, and he choked on a pretzel for crying out loud!
"W" is trying to open a 3rd front on the old WP line, which is ironic with the gov't takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Tom, South Bound Brook, NJ, USA
Although I have always appreciated Britain's support in World affairs, I do not appreciate this clown's attempt at humor. I understood his jokes all to well and see the damage in society from his type of beliefs. Bush was correct and the World will understand the stakes in hindsight.
DW, Warsaw, USA
Beverly, Newalla, OK - last time I looked we were supporting YOU in Iraq (twice). We feed ourselves BUYING from America - it's called trade and it's why the US is rich. RB is a dick but he's entitled to his opinion - that's freedom of speech - another great export from the US. Remember that?
EW, Bristol, UK
Russell Brand may have issues but as publicity stunts go I think this one gets top marks. Almost 300 comments, mostly from Americans. Love him or hate him, this guy has reached his market!
Zahir, Hounslow, UK
Why criticize Russell Brand any more than you would jump on a crippled deviate. He managed to find ways to offend everyone. The MTV producers are to be congratulated. It was a new low in TV programming. The highlight of the show was the return of a Britney Spears. God guide her in the future.
Martin, Miami, USA
I'm British and don't think Russell Brand is funny. This, however, is hilarious.
One objection I do have to this sort of thing is that he will likely have the opposite effect from the one he wants; for many Americans their pride will surely not allow them to vote for a candidate that we want...
Adam Piper, Manchester, UK
Wow... First the Beatles... then R Brand. Now that's progress.
wally, Riverview, United States
Right to poke at Bush but so wrong to endorse obama. We don't know enough about British politics to form an educated opinion and apparently the same rule applies to the Brits.
Clean, Tucson, Arizona
Never heard of this guy before today.
Don't expect to hear of him again after tomorrow.
Don't care what he thinks or says.
What he says doesn't match the general sentiments of our allies the British.
Harold, Phoenix, USA
What's really worrying in these comments is the people like Anita who state 'Pushed me to vote for mccain'. Seriously? Off the back of some comments by a COMEDIAN? On a music t.v show? It is alarming that this sort of thing is what influences people in chosing their candidate.
Amelia , London, UK
Can't take a joke?
Believe me, I'm laughing hysterically that Brits' think Brand is a comedian.
Mary Catherine, Elmhurst, USA
I feel so sad for the mentaly retarted that they had to be compared to Bush.
Steve, Ohio, USA
The attacks on the British, just because Russell Brand is British is quite hysterical.
But it's reassuring that some Americans can take a joke.
And if a joke, by the host of a music awards ceremony, pushes you to vote for Mccain, well, a lot of thought's gone in to that, well done.
Jenny, London, UK
Russell Brand....The British comedian..
Are you quite sure about this? At what point did he rise above the retarded schoolboy smut and become....funny?
m collins, Leeds,
Nick, Austin TX, USA - "Margaret Thatcher and Alzheimers" hee hee, I don't think anyone over here would be too concerned to be honest - I can assure you people have said a lot worse about her and most people wouldn't give a fig. Who on earth is Cedric the Entertainer though?
Anna, Edinburgh, Scotland
Russell who? Isn't he a large guy who does horoscopes?
Gezzy, London, England
It is easy to attack the U.S. and make fun of its policies. While I respect the U.K. and its people to a high degree, it seems most of the Brit posters jump on a bandwagon of anti-Americanism. When did the U.S. last bomb the U.K.? How about Spain? Time to see who your real enemies are.
John, Saint Petersburg FL, U.S.A.
This is why MTV hired him. To take shots at Bush and promote Obama. Speaking of retard, have you ever heard Obama talk without his teleprompter? People like Brand are the reason why Americans don't elect liberals to be President. Brand is what passes for an "intelligent English comedian"?
Patrick, Atlanta, USA
He's brilliant - I am so happy that RB has got to Yanks hopping mad. Cutting edge comedy is about being controversial and the US provides such excellent fodder. If he criticised our country and politicians (which he does) we would laugh! What amazing publicity this has generated for MTV!
Richard, Manchester, UK
Hilarity abounds. Polarization is a sign of non-critical thinking. Bush's nowhere near as bad as his critics say nor is his policies as flawless as some believe. We Yanks need thicker skin. You Brits need to see the world the way it really is. We all need humility in our opinions.
Paul, Miami, USA
I can understand why he wasn't funny from an american point of view, but to I as a British fan those Bush comments were hilarious, it's a great example of his humour.
Fergus, Kendal, Britain
Anita in Los Angeles
If a bad joke decides who is going to rule your country for the next 4 years, I think you've just proved Brand's point.
Mark, Cambridge, UK
You didn't find him funny? So what! I hardly think it's an excuse to launch a full scale attack on Britain. To be fair, he's not particularly well liked over there either.
Jumping on the bandwagon with your sweeping generalisations, I think that you Americans take yourselves far too seriously.
Phil, Baar, Switzerland
Whatever one thinks of Brand or MTV, it is shocking to read the post from the person who said it, "Pushed me to vote for McCain". Really? Come on. What happened to choosing your president on the basis of the issues and the relative merits of the candidates?
Paul, Tokyo, Japan
