His hits may no longer fill the airwaves and prime ministers may no longer flock to his villa in Barbados, but Sir Cliff Richard proved yesterday that he still has the capacity to captivate the British public as he spoke for the first time about his “close friendship” with a former Roman Catholic priest.
Sir Cliff, 67, who has refused to answer questions about his sexuality for decades, reveals in his newly published autobiography that Father John McElynn, with whom he lives, is his “companion”.
Writing in My Life, My Way, the committed Christian, who has sold more than 250 million records, says that he believes the Church should approve same-sex marriages, although he has no plans to enter into one.
Sir Cliff writes that he met Mr McElynn, a former missionary, seven years ago, while visiting New York. “He hadn’t had any thought at the beginning of giving up the priesthood, but when it became clear he was thinking of the possibility, I suggested he might help me with some charitable projects,” he said.
“That was seven years ago and our arrangement has worked out really well. John now spends most of his time looking after my properties, which means I don’t have to. John and I have over time struck up a close friendship. He has also become a companion, which is great because I don’t like living alone, even now.
“People often make the mistake of thinking that only marriage equals happiness. I may suddenly meet someone and feel differently, but right now I am not sure marriage would enhance my happiness.”
The pop star, an Anglican whose published religious works include a collection of 50 Bible stories, insists that he does not think his Christian fans will be perturbed by his announcement. He writes: “As for my sexuality I am sick to death of the media’s speculation about it. What business is it of anyone else’s what any of us are as individuals? I don’t think my fans would care either way.”
He adds that he believes that the legal recognition of civil partnerships between homosexuals reflects modernisation, and that the Church must embrace them.
“Same-sex marriages are perhaps a modern example of how things have changed,” he writes. “I think the Church must come round and see people as they are now. Gone are the days when we assumed loving relationships would be solely between men and women.
“In the end, I believe, people are going to be judged for what they are. It seems to me that commitment is the issue, and if anyone comes to me and says, ‘This is my partner – we are committed to each other’, then I don’t care what their sexuality is. I’m not going to judge – I’ll leave that to God.”
Despite revealing that his current partner is male, Sir Cliff also writes in his book that he twice nearly married a woman. “One was Jackie Irving, a dancer whom I met in Blackpool,” he said. “She was utterly beautiful and for a while we were inseparable.”
The second was Sue Barker, the BBC sports presenter and former tennis star, whom Sir Cliff met in 1982. “I seriously contemplated asking her to marry me,” he said. “But in the end I realised that I didn’t love her quite enough to commit the rest of my life to her. There were no broken hearts. Both of them subsequently got married.” The singer also writes of how he was seduced by Carol Costa, who was at the time the estranged wife of Jet Harris, who played in Sir Cliff’s backing group, the Shadows. He said: “I was surprised but not unhappy to be seduced.”

Sorry for you mr Webb the God iserve is a loving gracious father who gave us rules to live by so that glory may be brought to him
God gave up. People who decided that they did not need to obey his loving caring law
Don't kid your self and say it's no ones business
Liz , Belfast, Ireland
Thank goodness for to days technology. Can watch videos of Sir Cliff. Sure bring back memories to when I was a teenager in the UK... The word says "Listen to no man, but listen to me." If people would take a look at theirselves then they will look at others differently. Jesus loves you Sir Cliff!
Margaret, Texas, USA
Yes but from God is where they got what to write from. The Bible is his word.
Ann, Lansing , US
Do you know how ridiculous some of you people sound quoting stuff from the Bible? God didn't take up a pen and write all that stuff - it was man who put pen to paper and we all know how misguided human beings can be! Being gay is no abomination & for what it's worth I don't believe Cliff is !
Steve Wills, diss, uk
Jesus was pure though and was without sin and did not do immoral things. And there are Bible verses and Scripture which are against homosexuality.
.
Karen, Greeensboro NC, USA
Well if men loving men [sexually] were such a big deal you would think that Jesus might have a word to say on the subject! As it is, He seems quite at ease with men and women, even physically, with John his "beloved" lying on his breast! Selective use of the "Bible" [it means "Library"!] can be bad!
Davy, Southsea, England
Who Cliff has in his bed is his business but don't say you are a Christian if you are not really living it and following the Bible which is God's word and is against male homosexuality! The Bible stays the same no matter what time or year it is!
Billy, Minneapolis, USA
Leave Cliff alone! what if he is, or what if he isnt. Its up to him what he wants to do and what he wants to tell the world. great to hear that hes happy living with his companion whether that be a sexual relationship or not that is for Cliff & his companion to decide on in the privacy of their bed!
Tom, Brisbane, Australia
So many christians have put Cliff on a pedestal over the decades.Media 'greats' have a responsibility to those who look up to them and he should be careful of what he says.True Cliff the world has moved on but the Word of God remains the same.Don't be drawn into worldly ideas brother Cliff.
Stan Betterton, Birmingham, UK
Hi Sir Cliff,
I don't know what you have said but just to say again, you are a blessing ,always have been and still are. God loves you.
We shouldn't throw stones at anyone ,that is Jesus's way. But, like any sin it 's good to let the world know that same sex sexual relationships are not God's way
Miryam Sakeena Nahar, Warwick, England
According to the Word of God people who indulge in sexual relations with a member of the same sex are called an "abomination" by God, so your lifestyle is between you and God, but please don't say publicly Cliff that it is alright and lead others astray who have considered you a "Christian".
Judith Giliomee, Mullingar, Ireland.
The Bible is clearly against it and God may love you but he does not like this the Bible is God's word.
Janice, Ottawa , Canada
Thank you Cliff for recognising same se relationships. I was with women up to the age of 27years and I am now with my male partner and we are extremely happy and our families support us as do our friends. God loves us as any other. Gald to hear you are number 3 in the Uk Top 40 !!! Martin
martin mc mullan, belfast, antrim
Robert in Hull says: "The church regards marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman in whose context children may be conceived and cared for." What about people who get married and can't/won't have children? I've heard them called "selfish", but why? Marriage is for love of each other!
Dianthus, Winchester, UK
what is a close friend Bill Latham used to be a close friend that lived in Cliffs house so what is the difference now ." None" he is still a great guy and does not need to answer to anyone Cliff i will love you regardless let narrowminded people think what they want see you in November xxx
Judith Sharp , washignton , england
The issue is not about eating pork or shellfish in Leviticus.. It is about male homosexuality and the Bible is clearly against it.
Kim, Jacksonville , US
A very sad fan!!
I am astounded!!! The Bible clearly states that marriage is made for a man and a woman. Both the New and the Old Testament make this very clear and Church Leaders should also!
How easy to be misled if you don't stay close to Lord and read and study His word constantly.
Mary Webster, Heysham, UK
Kim, Jacksonville - I bet you've conveniently forgotten the parts of Leviticus that condemn eating shellfish and wearing mixed fibres. When was the last time you sacrificed an animal without blemish or exercised your bible-given right to buy a slave? Do you eat pork?
Kath, London, England
I liked Cliff and the Shadows since the 50's
Cliff decades ago , became a" devout Christian" and seemed to allude he was living a chaste lifestyle.
Is he no longer following or living by Christian Principles?
Has he lived a lie for eons
In his bio, he should be truthful and stop hinting.
Beth, Alexandria, USA
If it's good enough for the Church to accept gay relationships, then it should be good enough for Cliff to get out of the closet. If he is too gutless to, then he should keep his mouth shut.
James, Sydney, Australia
Why has this become a debate about God and the Bible?
Cliff said he lived with his best mate. Lucky bugger ! (no pun intended)
I have to live with my wife and 3 kids. If I lived with my best friend I'd have a pool table, a Wii and a subscription to Man Utd TV by now.
Keep living the dream Cliff !!!!
Stu, Newtown, Wales
As long as sexual abstinence is pursued they will find happiness. Not otherwise.
Father Bryan Storey, Tintagel, UK
"Judge Not, and Ye Shall Not be Judged!" "Condem Not.....!" so what of Sir Cliff keeping his sexuality private all these years. Many a mutt-faced numpty has been trying to get the goods on Sir Cliff so they can 'tear him down!'. So Sir Cliff has 'come out' to an extent, so what. Get a Life!!
B Clarke, Chelmsford, England
A fan of over 40 yrs, I love Cliff's voice since and always. I don't care of his sexual relationship or letting myself trapped in endless debates about it. As long as he's not humiliating himself the way G. Michael did in a Hollywood public area and caught in the act, I couldn't careless!
Maria, Jakarta, Indonesia
Just because you buy/listen to/enjoy somebody's music doesn't mean that you own them, or have the right to dictate how they should live their life. Maybe this is why he hasn't confirmed or denied his sexuality. It's very saddening that people can't love/accept their fellow beings as themselves?
charlotte, Shrewsbury,
As a fan of cliff for many vears i am shocked by these revelations.
iain rae, tunbridge Wells, U.k.
I've been a fan of Cliffs for over 40 years and am pleased to hear that he agrees with civil partnerships but am curious to know what sort of relationship he really with has with his "companion"
Is it sexual or not? Why if he is gay doesn't he come out like many other famous people have done.?
geraldine yabsley, Erkelenz, Germany
I agree with Stewart Cully. I bet Rev. Billy Graham would not agree with those views. And God and the Bible are plainly against male homosexuality. Read these Bible verses: Leviticus Chapter 20 verse 13 . And read Romans Chapter 1 verse 27.
Kim, Jacksonville,
Well his brother Keith has lived a fuller life , though their mum must be proud of the two of them !
jinxon, Hamilton , Scotland
Cliff you have let your Lord down badly. This is such a weak argument. This is not about the Church modernising this is about you justifying your lifestyle. The Church was born into 1st century Hellenistic/Roman cultures where homosexuality was an acceptable thing. It wasn't right then/not now!
Stewart Cully, Dumfries, UK
Bravo Cliff. Of course he confuses Civil Partnerships with Same sex marriages. Civil Partnership maybe done in love but they are not marriages. It may be a legal nicety but there you have it. So those getting worked up by these partnerships should not! They are not I repeat not marriages!
Steven, Buckhurst Hill,
finally we get the truth from cliff!
hes an anglican.
john, burntwood, uk
CLIFF IS GAY SHOCKER! Not. The admission, albeit done to shift books, is just about the most rock n' roll thing he's ever done.
Nemo, strasbourg, france
Sir Cliff Richard appears not to understand that the Church regards marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman in whose context children may be conceived and cared for.
Same sex "marriages" cannot receive the blessing of the Church because they are mere parodies of that relationship.
Robert, Hull, UK
Self important? That's a wee bit 'knee-jerk'. Let us not forget, christianity is a belief system, nothing else. It's not fact, science, or even history. A string of moral parables. Grimms does the same, though a bit more entertaining. Richards has the right to express his vision of it. Viva Cliff!
Dean Mullen, Panama City Beach, USA
Please, please people, try to understand the bible was not written by God, it was written by Man..you do not have to live your life by a book that had been corrupted and changed over the years....the sooner the cult of the Bible and the Koran is gone the better for all humanity...
Michael, Bangkok,
Why do so many Christians persist in willfully ignoring one of the Bible's core messages; "Judge not lest ye be judged".
What happened to God is Love? Why do some people insist on telling others that fire and damnation will be theirs? Possibly a base human instinct to feel superior to others?
Rosalind Wolfe, Manchester, UK
Its a shame to see that a so called devoted christian for how many years comes and declares it is ok for the church to declare same sex marraiges. The bible is so complete in that when you study the word of God, it is so plain to see that God is against same sex marraiges or dealings. Its a big shame
Dami Siyanbola, watford, england
Glynnis, Martin
Both of you seem to ignore the fact that Christianity itself has misunderstood and gone against what "God finds acceptable"
The entire religion was started by men who took the word of God and twisted it. So why the surprise when men today continue to do the same??
A, London, UK
I am sad - a fan of over 40 years I am disappointed at his misunderstanding of some basic biblical principals.......
Glynnis, Woking, UK
"Im not going to judge Ill leave that to God.
When God has made it very clear what he finds acceptable behaviour and what is not and we do that which offends him we are judged already and found guilty.
Is it not the Christians duty to warn and encourage others to avoid God's judgement.
Martin, Skye,
