After winning five Grammy Awards Amy Winehouse might finally expect to find a little respect in America. But no, no, no.
Within minutes of her success at the music industry awards in Los Angeles, the troubled British singer was criticised by the very star who had handed out her Record of the Year prize. “I think she has a great talent but I don’t agree with the Grammys giving her those nods,” Natalie Cole said at the Sony BMG post-Grammy Awards party. “I think it sends the wrong message, that even in the midst of her stupor of drugs she can get nominated for all these awards.
“It’s a slap in the face to artists who work very hard that they give it to someone who really obviously doesn’t have a grasp of what she has.”
Cole, daughter of the jazz legend Nat King Cole, and an eight-time Grammy winner, can claim to know whereof she speaks, having battled heroin and cocaine addiction in the 1980s and spent time in “rehab” – the title of Winehouse’s winning song.
“I’ve been in this business over 25 years and I sacrificed five years of my own life on drugs and almost lost my life because of it,” Cole said. “So I take great offence to almost see someone getting glory out of being in the position that they’re in – she needs to get her life together and embrace her craft; she will lose it if she doesn’t get it together. Rehab is no joke. I was there for six months.”
Americans have followed lurid headlines about Winehouse’s struggle with drugs and erratic behaviour – which The New York Times called her “tabloid-ready lifestyle” – as if she were a transatlantic version of their own favourite music-industry casualty, Britney Spears.
Winehouse had to cancel a US tour after being hospitalised last year and got a US visa too late to attend the Grammys. She appeared by videolink from London’s Riverside Studios, singingYou Know I’m No GoodandRehab in front of a small audience, and critics found her performance compelling.
“The melding of eras was the theme of the 50th anniversary Grammy Awards on Sunday, but it will be remembered as the night Amy Winehouse was crowned as the new queen of pop-present,” declared The Hollywood Reporter.
“Off-key at times, her drawled syllables sometimes veering uncomfortably close to blackface, she nonetheless was the most exciting performer of the evening,” the Los Angeles Times said. “Her desperation to do well was palpably human, and her delivery was a gamble – a harder push, and a more electric one, than you usually see during a staged event like the Grammys.”
Winehouse had been nominated for six awards and won five – Record and Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black and Best Female Pop Vocal.
The jazz veteran Herbie Hancock scooped Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters.
Voting had ended shortly before Winehouse again made the headlines when a leaked video apparently showed her smoking crack cocaine. Winehouse, who was allowed to leave her rehabilitation clinic for her Grammys performance, dedicated her success to her imprisoned husband, her family and London’s blaze-hit Camden Market. The singer, hugging her mother, said: “This is to my mum and dad – for my Blake incarcerated.”
Blake Fielder-Civil, her husband, is awaiting trial on a number of charges. Referring to the fire that destroyed her beloved Hawley Arms pub, she added: “And this is for London because Camden Town ain’t burning down.”

I think Mark Ronson should get over Winehouse & start to give other talent a break.
Jacob, Malvern, UK
5 grammy were a bit much yes but 6 grammy were much too much for Lauryn Hill a few years ago too !
Amy is a different act it's cool artist of her style get recognition, Now Britney has no style of her own she can barely sing can't play an instrument and can write a tune give us a break with those scattered brain comparisons !
Peter Shaller, Paris, France
Although I do agree in some aspects, Natalie Cole to my knowledge has not written much in her whole career ! can she play na instrument ? her music pre Unforgettable was very cheesy and cheap too ! thus I see no comparisons perhaps Winehouse has gotten one too many Grammy this time around yes but please whta kind of comparison to Britney, ti's like comparing Winehouse to the butcher round the corner they both happen to have an addiction but comparison ends there.
Philippe Dury, Lausanne, Switzerland
I'd feel more reluctant to hand out an award to nasty, arrogant singer - and there is plenty of them!
These where awards about singing, nothing else. Not 'Which great singer sets the best example to impressionable young people'! If she wasn't on drugs nobody would bat an eyelid about her deserved awards (unless they didn't like her singing which is reasonable), so why should we only hand out the praise to those who we approve of? People like her singing and that's what the awards are about, or should be anyway!
Heather, Stockton,
Nice one Amy - good to see somebody with some character win some grammys - Beyonce and co all look and sound like they have been mass produced on a production line - she writes songs, she sings live - mistakes and all, keep on going girl.
fred, London, england
Amy Winehouse reminds me of Helen Shapiro - I keep expecting her to break into "Walking Back to Happiness...".
Arnold Ward, Weybridge, Surrey, UK
Im a HUGE fan of amy's i was so excited to see her do so well natalie is just jealous and that is sad. other great american singers like chaka khan have come out in support of amy and i cant wait to see her perform live healthy here in new orleans hope that happens one day. I hope she knows she has touched so many people with her words and her sincerity and her incredible voice Amy you have so much to live for. put yourself first and share your God given gift with the world. God Bless

I can't imagine who Natalie Cole thinks she is to make such obnoxious remarks. She's actually a bit of a nobody with some spleen to vent. Amy's artistry is the issue; not her personal habits. Her observation is not instructive. It's simple begrudgery. I've heard a lot of people comment after having seen the show that they didn't know who Amy was and that she seemed so weird. I believe those naysayers along with Natalie have the same expectations for the cheesy diva types being the winners at these events. Anyone original makes them very uncomfortable. I say good for you, Amy! Congratulations!
Meredith McDonough, Los Angeles, USA
I agree with Ringo. He heard what Natalie said about Amy and his comment was: "those are some grapes"
Bill Delaney, Rensselaer, N.Y. / USA
Natalie Cole, being an ex-drug addict herself is the last one to give lectures of this sort. Drugs and music industry has always walked hand in hand - if we want to be fair, lets subject every singer to a drug test before he even steps on the stage and and see how many will come out clean...
This search for a perfect role model has become really tiresome - let her just sing and get better!!
Nick, Paris, France
As I recall, Miss Cole herself battled alchohol and drug addiction at the begining of her musical fame. It is not for she or anyone to say that an artist, particularly one of Amy Winhouse's talent, should be denied an award because of a disease. Simply charming.
Carolyn Lenihan, Westerly,
In 2000, Cole released an autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which described her battle with drugs during much of her life. In the book, Cole admitted to using LSD, heroin and crack cocaine. Cole said she began recreational drug use while attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She also disclosed that she was arrested in Toronto, Canada for possession of heroin in 1975. Cole continued to spiral out of control - including one incident where she refused to evacuate a burning building, and another where her young son Robert nearly drowned in the family swimming pool while she and her first husband, the late Reverend Marvin Yancy, were on a drug binge.[5] She did eventually enter rehab in 1983 (jmilton ).
Ana, London, UK
Grammy's are for achievement in music and nothing else. If Natalie Cole wants awards to be based on clean living she should set up the Clean Living Awards. I bet we'd all watch those on TV.
Iain Thorpe, Wellington, New Zealand
since when were music awards given out for living well? they're awarded on the quality of the music - and so amy winehouse thoroughly deserved those awards. yes, i hope she sorts her personal life out too, but, despite the tabloids' bets efforts, her personal life is 'personal' and shouldn't remotely come into consideration when considering music awards

Mark Ronson did get the recognition he deserves. He won Best Producer at the same award ceremony.
Gillian, London,
Natalie Cole was beging jealous and nasty. Amy deserved her Grammy's. I wish her well in her recovery.
Amy Lord Flury, Cincinnati, USA
Well Natalie Cole has her point - Amy Winehouse does need to get her act together, but then so did nearly every jazz, soul rock diva in the past. It is the voice that counts -and we know from the recent BAFTA best female actor that Edith Piaf the little sparrow - had a legion of troubles and problems, so did Judy Garland, and..........
Stephen Pain, odense, denmark
Mark Ronson is the talent, and any singer would succeed with Ronson .Amy was just lucky to be the one.How come Ronson did not get the recognition he deserves?
C.Elder, Paris, FRance
Fortunately the Grammies are not about who works the hardest or the cleanest, but about who's the best. Talent wins out and this is just sour grapes.
Martin Wisse, Plymouth,
The Grammy's are awarded to recognize musical talent, not to make recommendations to the public about role models. Amy's well publicized problems have no bearing on her fitness to be judged as worthy of a Grammy.
Judge her music on it's own merits, and if you feel you need to judge the person, do so independent of the music.
Martin Boddy, Hassi Messaoud, Algeria
I just lost trust in Grammys. Were people over there deaf to give out 5 awards to someone who doesnt know anything else but to scream and make faces. There were better songs and much talented artists. I feel that they are kinda giving the wrong messages to teenagers who kinda think pop idols as gods. I am dissapointed.
Sam, London,
It's about celebrating talent and the pleasure it gives the world, not about lifestyle. Poor Natalie Cole, I guess nobody gets so much joy from her work, and now she's reminded everyone of that. D'oh..
Betty, Reading, UK
I beg to differ. Amy Winehouse won in the respective categories because of her immense talent. Period. Of course we would all like every Grammy winner to be off drugs free of problems, kosher, a role model - that's not what the Grammy's all about. Drugs, booze, societal problems are all part and parcel in the music world, in performers' lives - it's rock!! She didn't win in the Gospel category did she?
Well done to Amy Winehouse - the singer!!
S K Lin, Hong Kong, China
Your kidding yourselves if you believe that the music industry is drug free and only ever full of role models.
Dan, Brisbane, Australia
Giving an award to Winehouse shows just how cynical the music industry is - it will exploit anything for profit.
She is the worst possible role model for the young and should be shunned.
Chris, Ashford, Middlesex, UK
Yeah Amy! You will continue to be a winner if you continue with your rehab. How much more you could accomplish sober.
You are already talented.
Rachael, Phoenix, USA
I am psychiatrist and you are music. You should talk about music. If she is talented has to win.Psychological problems do not give grammy.Be honest with you yourself and do not mix the things.
PS.It is anti ethical You could not tell that.Because you represented Grammy in that night
Analigia, London, UK
I'm absolutely thrilled for Amy! Such a talent deserves such an award.....5 at that! I just hope now she realizes how much her music is enjoyed by the entire world and hope she can get her personal life together enough to produce more and more great music! I'm rooting for you AMY and am send ing all my love and support your way!
irene, albuquerque, NM
Until I watched the Emmay's I had no idea who Amy was. But once I heard her voice, i thought what a talent. I so hope she continues with her drug rehab and comes out on top.
Amy, I love your voice and support you...please come out a winner.
