Oh, dear. Nicolas Roeg — the genius director who gave us Performance and Don’t Look Now — hasn’t made a feature film since 1996, and after seeing Puffball, you’ll wish that he hadn’t bothered to do another. Based on a novel by Fay Weldon, this is a dull, silly film, stuffed full of witchcraft rubbish, heavy-handed symbolism and awful sex scenes. Liffey (Kelly Reilly) is rebuilding an old cottage in the Irish countryside when she discovers that she is pregnant. This provokes a jealous rage in one of the locals, Molly (Rita Tushingham), who unleashes dark forces. Not even a guest appearance by Donald Sutherland can liven up this stodgy affair.
