Caramel
Shot with a colour palette that looks like a selection of exotic ice-creams, Caramel is a vivid portrait of a group of women who gossip about their lives and loves in a beauty salon in Beirut. Layale (played by the writer/director Nadine Labaki) sneaks off for assignations with a married man; Rima is trying to come to terms with her lesbianism; Rose has sacrificed the chance of a life of her own to care for her elderly mother. It’s sentimental, warm-hearted and occasionally irreverent, a chick flick filled with small stories that have a universal resonance.
