“It was hot humid and sweaty. I think we all lost a couple of pounds by the end,” Amitabh Bachchan stated after the second performance of his Unforgettable World Tour ended in Trinidad and Tobago (TNT) on Sunday night. The Bachchans – dad Amitabh, mom Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter in law Aishwarya – along with Preity Zinta and Ritesh Deshmukh arrived in the twin island republic early on Sunday morning from Toronto where the tour had opened.
Despite being jetlagged, the stars held a press conference at Trinidad’s newest five star hotel, the Hyatt Regency in the capital city Port-of-Spain. Amitabh, who first visited Trinidad in 1981, was clearly impressed with the rapid industrialisation of the oil-rich country. “There are so many wonderful changes, the infrastructure, the roads; it’s unbelievable!”
Held at the cricketing venue, the Queen’s Park Oval’s concert started over an hour late, there was a power cut and the stars themselves lacked their full costumes which had been lost in transit and did not arrive until the show was over.
Judging from the dancing sold out crowd who had paid as much as £250 for a ticket and flown in from surrounding islands like Guyana and Suriname, it certainly was an unforgettable night. Amitabh performed a local calypso, Ash and Abhi did their 'Bunty aur Babli’ hits and Preity Zinta was as bubbly as ever. Preity enjoyed the lively audience: “The love that comes from here is something else!” The group’s finale was the title track from from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
The ‘Who’s Who’ of Trinidad’s strong Indian community came out to party including the Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday with his wife and other Trini MPS.
The Bachchans left promptly on Monday for Los Angeles for the next show which is on July 26.
Music directors Vishal-Shekhar stayed back in order to explore the island, sample the local cuisine and listen to ‘chutney’ music, a steamy mix of Bollywood and calypso. The duo had dinner at Trinidad’s poshest curry house, Apsara and visited a local market where they picked up CDs of Trinidad musical hits. Do not be surprised if their forthcoming soundtracks contain homage to Trinidadian songs. Remember the classic Om Shanti Om from Subhash Ghai’s Karz? Well, 'OSO' is a direct lift of local calypsonian Lord Shorty’s track of the same title!
