What makes the perfect crime movie?
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Everyone remembers the serpentine Dr Hannibal Lecter, but the real surprise here is a powerfully sympathetic female perspective on hunting serial killers.
Darkness in Talinn (1993)
A mastermind plans to cut the power to Estonia’s capital to steal gold bullion, not realising that his wife is surviving on a life-support machine.
The Transporter (2002)
Jason Statham will deliver anything anywhere, but what’s inside the box? A beautiful woman — that’s the McGuffin and the love interest taken care of.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
This complex, moody, utterly original story of the devil and a police lineup demands that you watch it twice — and enjoy it more the second time around.
Freebie and the Bean (1974)
Cops Alan Arkin and James Caan bicker like old lovers, conduct irresponsible street shoot-outs and whack a police car through a tower block — six floors up.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Sergio Leone’s sweeping epic begins with childhood loyalties and ends decades later in betrayal and tragedy, giving De Niro his definitive gangster role.
Fargo (1996)
A great example of an interesting good cop (Frances McDormand). “And then there’s this execution-type deal,” she says casually, and you love her unflappability.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
When thieves fall out, blood will be spilt . . . Tarantino’s purest thriller is a razor-sharp character piece that feels like a sweat-inducing stage play.
Jar City (2006)
Iceland’s traceable bloodlines reveal a series of deaths, although the most disturbing part is watching a cop eat a takeaway sheep’s head.
The Last of Sheila (1973)
A Riviera mystery with six yacht-bound suspects, this neglected Sondheim-penned thriller provides all the clues and an unguessable punchline.

Brian Lehman, San Rafael, California, US
How old is your reviewer -- 26??
The B&W classics: White Heat, Maltese Falcon, Little Cesar, Public Enemy ...
Gary Hypes, Antioch, USA
The Godfather
Need one say more?
Peter Williams, Hull,
How about Pulp Fiction, Basic Instinct, Sea of Love?
Andrei, Tyumen, Russia
No Country FOr Old Men was so embarrassingly overrated. Best crime movies?
Ronin anyone?
Leon?
Heat?
American Gangster?
There are loads not on this list that could be, but No Country For Old Men isn't one of them
James, Preston, England
What about:
The Taking of Pelham 123
The Third Man
Heat
No Country For Old Men
?
The list goes on.
Dave O, Cork, Ireland
Nobody has mentioned Scarface?!
Tony Montana, Miami, USA
I know they were a bit "hokey" but....the Basil Rathbone "Sherlock Holmes" movies,,,,,awsome
dave
dave pounds, Orangeville, Canada
Here's a proper list:
True Romance (James Gandolfini's big break)
Sexy Beast (oscar nominated Kingsley in true form)
The Driver (classic B-movie about getaways)
The Mechanic (charlie bronson in hitman role)
Goodfellas
The Godfather
Pulp Fiction
Fargo
Once Upon A Time in America
Usual Suspects
Gil, Tel Aviv, Israel
i don't know how you put those names together , the only Excuse iam ready to hear is ( Either you don't have a tv , or you were very busy to go to Cinema ).( Heat , Fight club , training day , se7en , along came the spider , insomnia ,perfume,Titanic ..yes Titanic , didn't she throw the diamond ?
bahaa, Egypt, Alexandria
Most of this selection is devoted to blood and guts crime. What about great heist or caper type films such as 'The Sting' or 'Oceans Eleven'? As for 'Transporter' as a top 10 selection... the less said the better I think. Still, it is a subjective topic.
Mayan Fox, Richmond,
Concur with most that Transporter doesn't belong on the list. Interesting no one has mentioned "Sleuth" with Lawrence Olivier and Michael Caine - ofcourse its much more effective in live theater.
Joe Salvez, Bangalore, India
How delightful to see Darkness in Tallinn on your list. I tip my hat to thee, Mr or Mrs list-maker!
Sophia, Brooklyn, USA
Remember "The Last of Shelia" really well, but crime movies and no "Lavender Hill Mob"?? What defines a crime movie?
"Crimson River" is good, the second not so good. "Wasabi" is just total fun. Love jean Reno when he gets "that" way.
Zina, San Diego, USA
Your Ten Best Crime Movies selection must rank as one of the Ten Worst Movie Lists of all times. Of your eccentric choices, only two - The Usual Suspects and Fargo - merit consideration. (Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs are horror, not crime movies.) And no Scorsese, Melville or classic noir?
Jean du Plessis, Johannesburg,
erm..... Transporter!? surely you jest.
someone suggested Sexy Beast... now that's a good Brit crime movie - whatever 'crime movie' means.
and Se7en should be on the list.
richard, sydney,
Walked out of "The Usual Suspects" and got my money back.
Hated "Carlito's Way".
Loved the Godfather Trilogy.
Strangers on a Train.
Can't watch some of Silence of the Lambs and Psycho, still!
Monster was interesting.
Fargo was really good!
Original Night of the Hunter.
Crying Game. Se7en.
Carlyle Braden, Hastings, India
That Sinking Feeling (1980) Bill Forsyth's wonderful debut farmed the fertile if narrow ground between LA takedown and Whisky Galore. Crossdressing, drugged security guards, cream buns, a platform heeled chase scene that has to be seen to be believed. What is not to love?
andrew, brockley,
Here's an alternative top 10:
Heat
Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas
Seven
Leon
The Departed
LA Confidential
Sin City
Casino
The Godfather
Phil, Oslo,
'The Long Good Friday' deserves to be in the top 10.
Guy, Hammersmith,
'Crime movie' is too vague, although I give you credit for trying to include everything. There are caper movies (Italian Job) and gangster movies (Godfather) and serial killer movies (Silence of the Lambs). You could include Spider-Man or Eight Men Out or the Hitcher under this heading.
robert, cheriton, va,
"Silence of the Lambs" I found profoundly disappointing.
Where's "Get Carter"?
Mike Alexander, Seaford, UK
I guess Goodfellas and the Godfather are catergorised as 'Gangster' films.
But wouldn't films like
Se7en
The French Connection
LA Confidential
Bonnie and Clyde
and Dirty Harry qualify.
Perhaps revise the list removing Transporter, even Fargo.
Niall Orr, Sydney, Australia
for me I really liked watching Jean Reno's The Crimson Rivers and while just googling it I found out that a second Crimson Rivers 2 movie had arrived by the time I watched no.1 lol
Wai-Yip Chan, Northampton,
Errol Morris' "The Thin Blue Line" is the best crime movie ever - A documentary not to be missed. Superb editing and very chilling. An amazing movie. Look it up, folks.
Bradley, Bryan, Texas , USA
one word - 'Heat'
robert walton, london,
And for one that's worth ten Erich von Stroheim's 1924 Greed..
elizabeth schumann, Paris, France
Blood Simple should have made the list...An outstanding movie ,which for me deserved multiple viewings, over the years.
JMcD, Louisville Ohio, USA
Sometimes difficult to draw a line between thriller and crime drama. Maybe a combo genre unto itself.....Crime Thriller. Godfather would be Crime, Goodfellas--Crime, Usual Suspects-Crime Thriller. Enjoyed Transporter, but no, not a classic. Add a vote for Miller's Crossing-Crime Thriller
wf, Blanchester, OH,
The French Connection and Serpico should have been in there too...
Bud, Suwanee, GA, USofA
What's wrong with classics from the pre-colour era? The Third Man, Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, and Double Indemnity for instance. The Godfather would head most people's list, I think. Freebie and the Bean? Oh dear. Perhaps I'm too old for this sort of thing.
Peter Sawbridge, Bexleyheath, OK
Has no-one seen "One of our dinasours is missing"?! A great crime caper which has so far not been mentioned.
Ustinov, London,
Hilarious to see Transporter in the list - the authors intentional attempt at a laugh surely! Stratham cannot do an American accent to save his life & it is highly cringeable to watch him try. Same as Ray Winston in Departed - shocking accent. Stratham is better in Lock Stock and should stick to it
Terry, Peterborough, UK
The Transporter? Reeeally?
Yeah, let's put that in instead of oh, Godfather II, Public Enemy, Scarface (either), The Sting, Asphalt Jungle, Goodfellas, The Great Train Robbery, or even Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, if you have to give a nod to Statham.
Transporter isn't in the top 1000.
Robin, Los Angeles, USA
Im Icelandic and i must say that jar city is nothing special at all, it has more class than the transporter though..
Valtyr, Reykjavik, Iceland
The Killers, The Killing, The Big Sleep,, While the City Sleeps,
Pick-Up on South Street, Madigan, Point Blank, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia,The Black Windmill and yes, Fargo!!
elizabeth schumann, Paris, France
some under-rated goodies: Infernal Affairs, Le Cercle Rouge, Sonatine, Chopper, Vengeance is Mine. and i'd put the average 1 hour Jeremy Brett episode of Sherlock Holmes ahead of the Transporter. sheesh.
chris, london,
....Um, worst list ever? No Pulp Fiction? L.A. Confidential? Godfather? Godfather II?
Chris, Orlando,
the transporter....i had a mighty chuckle when i saw that.
i would put the french heist film rififi at the very top of the list. the best crime/noir movie of all time.
jezza, adelaide, australia
The TRANSPORTER??? That movie should not be in the top 10, not even the top 100. It isn't even the best Jason Statham crime movie (Lock Stock, Snatch, The Bank Job, Italian Job). Can't argue with the rest of the list, but that movie sticks out like a sor- ...mangled, bleeding, barely attached thumb.
Gordon Farcus, Sydney,
Menace II Society/
John Lee, Los Angeles, USA
How about the Godfather? Doesn't that qualify as a crime movie?
Tanner, Phoenix, USA
Yeah what kind of list is this? Is this list trying to sell extra copies of The Transporter. Because no way is that a Top 10 and Chinatown isn't.
Chinatown
Public Enemy
L.A. Confidential
Sin City
White Heat
The Godfather
The Manchurian Candidate
Touch of Evil
The Third Man
Laura
michael, decatur,
A very disappointing list. This is my alternative (very noirish)Best 10:
Double Indemnity
The Killers
Out of the Past
White Heat
The Asphalt Jungle
The Big Heat
Rififi
Point Blank
Chinatown
LA Confidential
Robert Wright, Doncaster, UK
I LOOOOooooved Fargo. In a class of its own. !0 out of 10 for originality, acting, casting, lighting, pace, &c. &c.
Eugene, heidelberg, germany
I thought The Transporter was superb and worth its place. I think The Usual Suspects was the best crime movie of all.
David Gwilliam , Leicester , England
"The Transporter?" Wow.
Jason, Austin, Texas, USA
I applaud you for listing the Icelandic movie "Jar City". It´s a very good story and not well known.
Lara, Boston, USA
Rear Window should have been on the last. Could have replaced several dubious choices on this list. Road to Perdition, Chinatown, Double Indemnity, etc would have made for a more credible list. You could probably create a better list from movies not included on this list.
Jim, Stormville, US
The Maltese Falcon...did someone mention it and I missed it?
Sandy, Carlisle,
What about "The Road to Purdition" - surely one of the 10 best crime movies ever. And then of course there's always the absolute classic that is "The Long Good Friday".
"Transporter" - Garbage.
GMT Brisbane
Matthew Taylor, Brisbane, Australia
The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, Riffifi, Naked City, The Maltese Falcon, Chinatown, Double Indemnity, Dog Day Afternoon are just a few that come to mind.
fishfry, Pacifica, CA, USA
Does Sexy Beast count...? it does, it surely does. Ray Winstone delivered a solid performance as always and Ben Kingsley sparkles as the bad guy. Unmissable; and as others have said how could the list exclude Goodfella's? The benchmark by which others are measured...
Nige Danton, Saigon, Vietnam
Chinatown and The God Father are classics--they easily make any all-time greatest list, regardless of genre, and shoud be considered hors concurs. Pulp Fiction, The French Connection, Traffic and Goodfellas would all get my vote.
Jorge G L, Sao Paulo, Brazil
(Cough) The Transporter? you cant be serious!..But seriously though why isnt Infernal Affairs or The Untouchables in the list.
Dan, London, England
Couldn't believe Get Carter not being on the list.
Dave, Southsea, Hants
It's a blurry line between thriller and crime movie I'd say. But if you've (rightly) got The Usual Suspects in there, surely Seven must get a look in too.
Chris Taylor, Melbourne, Australia
Pulp Fiction and Falling Down.
Fred Herrmann, Terre Haute, Indiana, U.S.A.
The Transporter was fun. Not great. Not at all.
Tim, Wpg, Canada
What about the much-neglected Miller's Crossing? In my view by far the Coen brothers' best effort. [ watch for a short cameo from the young Frances McDormand ] Gabriel Byrne's best role INCLUDING Usual Suspects!
James , Canberra, Australia.
Nothing before the 70s eh?
How Kubrick's The Killing or the French film Riffizi just for starters?
Dave, Bristol, england
The Transporter? Get a grip! That movie is a major flop and does not even belong in the top 100. What makes you think that The Transporter is good cop movie? Might as well add Ronin if you are going by that vague definition.
David Sars, exeter, UK
If there is room for The Transporter then Dog Day Afternoon could feature.
Complaints aside, the list does present movies I haven't seen before, which makes it more useful to me than the usual Top 10 list! seen it, seen it, seen it...
Brendan, London,
How can you include a joke like Freebie and the Bean and not even mention one of the all time classics The Long Good Friday? Have to agree with The Usual Suspects, though.
AllanD, Dagenham, UK
Nothing wrong with "The Transporter" at all, except ii doesn't belong on any top ten list.
Joe, Tacoma , US
Hamish in Houston's right ...
Sexy Beast. (It also has the best beginning to any film EVER).
Pure British Class.
Then there's the Italian Job.
Then there's Heat.
Then there's Pulp Fiction.
In fact ... there are millions.
"Crime" is a bit too general.
Pavolos, Middlesbrough, England
Not a big fan of the genre, but surely The Big Sleep should be in there, just for the iconic performances from Bogart and Bacall, and the beautiful noir pacing and framing of the film. Also let's have Klute, The Long Goodbye, Chinatown...I'm embarrassed for you that Transporter is on the list!!
Jonathan Hooley, London, UK
One False Move would make my top 5 let alone top 10, it shocks you in the first 5 minutes and you are on the edge of your seat for the rest of the movie.
Saty, Reading,
Apart from the big shoot-em-up scene 'Heat' is a total dog: Big Al and DeNiro faxing in the performances and a bunch of irrelevant female walk ons. How about 'Manhunter', instead? Did anyone mention 'The Departed' yet?
John, Stafford,
What about "Seven", is that classed as a crime????. Transporter give us all a break.
Dave, Manchester, England
Chinatown, The Godfather (I and II), Thomas Crowne Affair (original), Heat, Goodfellas - there are scores of good crime movies. Freebie and Transporter ? The reviewer needs to get out more!
Mark, Dubai, UAE
How about the Cohen Brother's " Blood Simple"
Luigi Minoletti, New London, New hampshire, USA
What on earth is The Transporter doing on there? It wouldn't have made the top ten crime list in the year it was released!
Simon, Sydney,
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Here you are a real killer living around us, in our neibourghood, close to you, looking at you wife, children...
Mab, Asturias, spain
Here are a few crime movies I think would be worthy of your top 10 list:
The Marathon Man
L.A. Confidential
And to replace the Transporter: Either Point Blank or Payback. Both were a bit schlocky like the Transporter, but left my intelligence a little more satisfied
Alex, Alexandria, VA, USA
Must admit I'm amazed to see the Transporter on this list. Its only entertaining moment was a 5-second action sequence that had been shown in its trailers anyway. Other than that, it was simply the Big Hit only without a sense of humour.
Alex, Brisbane,
Everyone remembers the Coen Brothers' Fargo but their 'The man who wasnt there' was very special
Sam , London, UK
Just rented "The long Good Friday" and it's better than I remembered it! Does no one remember "DIVA" ?
Tom, Bangor, USA
Has every one forgotten The Long Good Friday?!
Alex Hall, Malta,
No Top 10 list is complete without the Pacino/DiNero/Kilmer movie "Heat". An absolute masterpiece. And while we're at it what about The Long Good Friday and Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels? Heat tops the lot. Of your Top 10, from those I've seen, I'd cull The Transporter - utter garbage.
Dave, Washington DC, USA
Does Sexy Beast count as a crime movie?
Hamish, Houston, Texas
