The release of the sixth film in the Harry Potter series, due out in the autumn, has been delayed until summer 2009.
Eager Harry Potter fans will now have to wait until next July to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The film was originally due out on November 21.
Warner Brothers said yesterday that by holding off for a summer release the film had a better chance of being a major box office hit.
In a statement, it said production of both Half-Blood Prince and the next film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was still on schedule, adding that the repercussions of the writers' strike in the US was also a factor.
Warner Brothers president Alan Horn said: "We agreed the best strategy was to move Half-Blood Prince to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer."

I have already decided to Boycott all Warner Films until the release of Harry Potter 6. But I'm not going to watch it at the cinema either. I'm going to wait for the DVD at Xmas.
Warner Bros can take a hike as far as I'm concerned. They deserve a worldwide boycott as they are just money grabbing
Phil C, Rugby, England
I saw a lot of snow and wintery scenes in the trailer. Excellent idea to delay the release until coming summer. I'm sure I'll be in exactly the right mood, wearing flip-flops, shorts and sipping a cool drink.
Methinks: wait for the DVD at Xmas 2009 and watch it with a cup of hot cocoa.
Bart, London,
I think that with everything going on in our world today, it is sad and unfair to make Harry Potter fans wait. It will be just as big of a hit in December. Why not get the economy moving by putting out a movie that everyone has been waiting for since the last one, and willing to spend their money!
Rhiannon Sherman, Denver , U.S.A
I think Warner Brothers are being extremely cruel! My son (10) and myself (36) have been waiting for this film since the release date was published!! All Harry fans should boycott all WB fans until Nov 09 and even wait until DVD is released! Hit them where it hurts... in their pockets!
Cherene Stitt, Saintfield, Nothern Ireland
Well, if y'all remember, the book was instrumental to the series, but not so exciting. Whether they release it now or in the summer of 2009, it will still be a box office smash regardless..
niki potter, Ashland, USA
Why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why why whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
paul, Hawks, USA
This Is Stupid! Im Tellin Yah i cant beleive this omg stupid stupid stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why why why why why why why why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!###########huhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Rooner, Waymart, USA
How stupid we've been waiting for this forever- I don't know if I want to see it now!!!!!
J, Miami, USA
Pretty ridiculous if you asked me. It seems that you have to wait even longer for each film to be released. I have waited long enough for this film to be released and to wait longer is frustrating. Within around 7 years they have released 5 films. Christmas release would have been better than summer
Rich, Hull, England
This is ridiculous, they want a big blockbuster hit? It's Harry Potter! It's going to be a big blockbuster hit any season! I think Harry Potter fans are going to be outraged that Warner Brothers is delaying this movie for no good reason. We wait months to see when it's coming out as it is.
Annalise, Denver, United States
This is ridiculous, im double thinking if I want to go see the movie or wait til I can get it for free on the internet.
i'm disappointed, wow.
Lyndsey, Palm Desert, USA
this is so annoying i've been looking forward to it and ma mates arggggggggggggggggggggg
ellie langley, holbeach, england
Now I could see if they were behind schedule or something and needed more time to work on it, then that would be ok because we want it to be the best movie!
However, to have it be because they want to make it a summer blockbuster is irritating.
Amy, Iowa,
this really angers me i must say, we've already waited far too long i even reread it so i would remmeebr everything
maggie, hfield, united states
I can't BELIEVE they are actually delaying a Harry Potter movie!!! Everyone's been looking forward to it!! And now we have to wait another (almost) year!
Scarlett, Fergus, Canada
i think who ever had the idea to keep it to july is v. GREEDY!
KELLY, MONAGHAN, IRELAND
waht a joke, doesnt matter when its released its gonna be huge!!!
karim, Upminster, UK
Disgusting antics by WB. Chamber of secrets had a November(ish) release. Why not push it till December similiar to LOTR.
Hopefully the delay will improve the quality (just like Ocarina of Time on N64)
shane, limerick,
I don't believe the comment that by holding off for a summer release the film had a better chance of being a major box office hit. Surely they must know that if it was released when it is supposed to be in November it will be just as big a hit than if it were released any other time of the year!
Karen, Cambridge, Cambs
I agree with all the other comments WB are very greedy indeed
What all Harry Potter fans should do now is to wait for the 6th film to be released on DVD and show WB that we will not be messed around with.
sally, warrrington, england
im a massive harry potter fan an when i heard it was being postponed i couldnt believe i just cannot wait a whole year before seein harry pootter 6
rebecca, crosby, england
I heard this was delayed so that Daniel Radcliffe can perform in Equis (spelling?) this year. I wish they'd delay Equis instead. I was really looking forward to seeing the movie... the trailer looks great!
K. Hiramoto, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Oh my goodess,
i couldn't belive my eyes when i realsied the terrible tradgy that is the persponing of the 6th a best upcoming harry potter, i truly miss mr potter and want to marry hagrid.
I loose sleep every night thinking about the years wait.
:(
Emma May Price, Leicester, England
First thing I wanna do is i boycott The Dark Knight and ALL other Warner Brothers movies that are upcoming until Harry Potter is released ! So are many people doing, that I know .. . . . .
Philipp, Vienna, Austria
I'm so angry!!! I've been looking forward to this movie for ages...and now we have to wait practically a whole year! seriously...the writers strike hardly would have affected the movie...it was basically already filmed...and im pretty sure its going to be a box office hit whenever its released!
Emma, Adelaide,
me and my friends are very annoyed about this i think that any true harry potter fan would go and see the film no matter what time of year, i agree with 'cheeseman' it is cruel to treat us this way and a great day out me and my friends have been planning for months has now been ruined by your greed
Nicki, Sleaford,
I am very annoyed about this! I heard it had been delayed, but I figured, oh well it's probably just until December or something. But no, July!? What the heck!?
Seth, Tallahassee, United States
i have eagerly awaited this next film ,and now i find they have delayed release just to make extra money .how dare they treat the fans this way im very dissapointed if it was not for the likes of us ,the devoted fans thew would have gone out of business years ago ...................................
cheeseman, penarth, uk
I am a huge Harry Potter but I HATE their movies, always have. How can any of you be suprized that they did this? They're part of corporate america. Of course they'd be happy to ofend ALL the harry potter fans if they though it would somehow make them richer, than if they didnt ofend them.
AJ Kuypers, Actom, Ontario
i am so angry and disappointed. if they r going to make me wait for another year to see this film i might as well wait for the dvd to come out and make sure i won't set foot in an overpriced cinema just to fill their pockets even MORE.
Shame on u, u have made a huge mistake. HUGE!!!!!!!
E. A. Tusser, london,
this is insane! People love these movies and have been counting down the days i mean really July 2009???!!!
Morgan, Palm Coast, USA
hearing that is infuriating, harry potter fans all over have been eagerly waiting for this film including me since OoTP Warner Bros have been unacceptable by doing this . Greatly disappointed.
Samuel, dumfries,
im am sooo utterly shocked right now
how can they delay a fiilm just because of awards and rubbish
im very upset since i am a top fan of the harry potter films.
seriously gutted
alice, manchester,
Im REALLY MAD!Ive been waiting to see this movie all year long!!!I think WB is selfish for caring about themselves instead of the fans. Plus Harry Potter will make thousands, maby even millions of dollars no matter wat time it comes out. And if JK didnt get a say in this she should because it her mo
Tom, Rialto, USA
As a Harry Potter fanatic, I will not boycott the Harry Potter films, there is no way I could do that, but if Warner Brothers does not come through and release the film when they first agreed to, I will boycott all other Warner Brothers films, and anything connected to Warner Brothers.
Teri, Brandon, USA
The only reason they are doing this is because they are afraid that TWILIGHT will beat them at the boxs office. Which is stupid. I mean they need to think of all the fans no matter what the competition is, if there are real fan they are going to go see it.
Katherine , Boulder City, USA
We wait and wait just to get shafted so they can make more money?? My kids will be infinitely disappointed. However, since they have decided to do this, I will make sure my friends and I do not go see it in the theaters. We have to wait another year, so a couple months won't make any difference.
Kim, Winona, USA
am so angry I can't see straight. I have already decided that I will boycott all things from Warner Brothers in protest. How greedy can you get. We finally get below 100 days and then this. How disappointing!
Linda McNeil, Corning, USA
Shame on you! I am 46 years old fan of Harry Potter. I am dissapointed about the delay in the release of the 6th Harry Potter movie, think about the younger fans and how dissapointed they will be.
Barbara , Henderson , USA
This just goes to show you that the only thing that matters is the good ol' almighty dollar. It's sad that those of us who are dedicated fans have to wait even more just because corporate America is behind the wheel. Very disappointing.
Bradley Doss, Northglenn, USA
I don't understand. Either you love Harry, or you don't. The same people are going to either see it or not, regardless when it is. All this does is get the fans upset.
Mel, Bridgeport, USA
Its terrible that Warner Bros. can disappoint all of the young harry potter fans who have been waiting a whole year to see Half Blood Prince in 2008 with the final Movies being release in 2009-2010. Warner Bro should be ashamed for being so
money hungrey and disappointing the fans of Harry Potter
Fredna, Sandusky, USA
It's awful they delay for financial gain. Shame JK didn't get a say, she surely would have thought of the fans. Other than that I would have though a pre-Xmas release a good idea for Cinema figures. Then again, I guess with a summer release they get the DVD out for Xmas & make their money on that!
Osman, Ripley, UK
disgusted i've already been counting down the days warner bros need to think of the fans not their pockets
gemma, cardiff, wales
I agree with everyone else. i was gutted when i first heard that the film is now going to be out in July. Warner Bros is a multi billion pound company which has let down thousands of Harry Potter fans
Dave Morgan, Basingstoke, Hampshire
This is crazy I've been waiting a long time and now delayed till next year.
Alyson, saint john, canada
That is completely unfair to the fans and very selfish of Warner Brothers who will make a killing on this movie anyway. Boo to you Warner Bros.
Erika, Baton Rouge,
Rediculous!!! Harry Potter will always be a hit whenever it is released, there is so much hype surrounding the phenomenon. Its just a blow and let down to the loyal fans who have already waited more then a year since the last film!!!
louciee, UK, Lincs, UK
This film should be boycotted just on principle, i'm a massive Potter fan but wouldn't think twice about boycotting it. It's going to make a shed load regardless of when it's released. I just think this is greedy and completely unjustifiable. My advice - read the books, they are great.
Ollie Sargeant, Ashford,
That's ridiculous thinking. Its going to be a hit no matter when its released. But it would have done better in Autumn this year or specifically during the school year not summer because of merchandising. Things that happen over the summer are old news by the time kids get back to school.
